Big Marine Steam Engine
« on: June 09, 2011, 05:24:19 PM »
You may remember the video i put up about casting a large steam engine cylinder.
Steady progress has been made machining it up.
Originaly i was going th build a mill engine but was talked around in to building a marine unit
Anyhow you like pictures

Looking good John.

The spattered specs show just how much effort you've put in, so far........  :D

That is pretty big.

Engine builders allways leave little on himself on every engine he builds: usually it is blood.

Time for a crank shaft
I was going to build a disc type (nice and easy) then Rob Wilson recond a built up crank would be easy  :) :) :) :) :)
The engine will have a 3.4 inch stroke so the crank will be a nice meaty job

The 2 webs were welded together then machined in to submission

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6040041.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6040036.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

A bit of en8 bar wea turned up for the big end 7/8 diamiter with 3/4 shoulders 3 thou interfierence fit in the webs
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6040051.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

25 mm stainless bar for the mains this was turned between centers (my first attempt at this )_
Turned down to be a nice fit in the webs then a 3 thou press fit

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6070013.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

Rob pressed the job together for me 10 ton was mentioned.

Just to make sure i welded it as well

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6070017.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

Back between centers for a final clean up

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6080031.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6080024.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine
Welding allowed me to put fillets on the webs

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6080029.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

To say i am pleased with the finished job would be a understatement

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6090006-1.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6090003.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

Even took some video of it going around

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6090005.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine

Pattern for the base next (i hate wood work) :( :(

Hi
Got a little bit more done
I needed a lump of bronze flat bar 1 inch thick by 3 inches square for the big end
It is nice to have a furnace
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7200008.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine
Flat bar cast up
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7190040.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine
Machined to size cut in half then bored to fit the crank pin (i turned a dummy pin to dead size and one .001 smaller)
To use as test pieces
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7200012.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine
Very happy with the fit Jjust nipping but still free enough to turn)
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7200015.jpgBig Marine Steam Engine
Con rod will be next
