Knurling tool

Time to attak the knurling tool

Design is to be 2 arms to appy presure and save the lathe bearings but to minimize the amount that the cros slide has to be pulled out the mounting is no be to the side of the toolpost.

My knurling tool that I dont like is very good (funtionally) but a bit of a pain to get in between the toolpost and the work.

And co-ordinate drilled

Then I drilled the holes in the arms and bolted groups of four together.  I cut the relief on the mill by alligning the scribed line with the top of the vice jaw..

The round ends was cut using the washer as a guide to set progressive angles on the mill vice and the cutter staying at one hight

Very nice work!

I especially like the way you rounded the parts with a washer and progressive cuts. I hadn't thought of that.

Very smart work their my man. Using washers like filing buttons to machine the round ends is very clever of you. Thanks for sharing with us.  :ddb: :ddb:

Rounding the material was an idea I read in a book some time?  I tried to find the referance again to put in here but cant remember what book it was.  The writer put a round bar through the hole and then used the vice to round around the bore leaving a piece flat to use as a ossilating cylinder. (instead of using casting?)


Hope to do a bit of turning for this poject this weekend.

Took some of the bar used as the spacers as it had the exact right thickness. This is to make the spacers.

That is the six spacers done.

Then 16 mm bar for the threaded bits.

Then Is set up to check.

After cutting the 8mm part of the edges I drilled 3 to 8mm (clearance for m8 thread)  and drilled 3 to 6.8mm for threading M8 and cut the non-threaded one for a flat surface

I think you just came up with another use for the ball turning fixture. Putting a knurl on a ball. Neat idea.

Nice project by the way. I need to make one of these some day.

Finally finished them- used some 20mmx10mm bar to cut t-piece to mount on the tool post.
Then cut a test piece of all 3 the knurl patterns.

I used 350 RPM (25mm bar) and a lot of wd40 sprayed onto the piece to flush away the bits - I cut small amounts and tighten a bit between each pass.  When I stop the piece to check the pattern I leave the knurling tool engaged and If need then just restart the lathe.  Others will have different ways but this works on my lathe.

The only problem is the large straight knurl takes a lot of presure and I think it will be for Ali only it took a lot of passes before the pattern looked right.

I have just red through this post ,what a great read and you have made three very fine knuling tools,that will give you good service for years   :clap: :clap: :clap: :clap: and you get a very nice crisp knurl too ,,,great job , i see you make good use of your ball turning attachment ,that another tool i will have to build.

I suppose it is lazy to not want to change the cutters over but now I know I will use the most appropriae knurl rather than the one that is in the knurling tool. :med:

If you need a COC will do but it is really easy to make.  Mine fits over the tailstock ram - but most uses a steel bar held in the tailstock.

  Thanks for that geroli.  Due to the Knurling tool and Tailstock t&d holders
  projects of yours, I am inspired to start making a few bits and pieces on     my   new mini lathe ( after my hip operation next Friday, and six weeks  recouperation! ).
  I have been searching for a book which deals with  similar  projects, but my local library reports that all such books have been "mislaid".  If you or anyone else reading this post can recommend such a book, I would be very grateful.  Shepherduke.

Really like the use of the ball cutter..... And the knurl on the radius... inspiring! never thought of that one, top marks  :bow:


You know I'm going to have to try and copy that now  :dremel:



I don't do too much knurling, find it difficult at times, think I may need to buy some new/sharper knurls..... I think stainless steel and inexperience killed mine a while ago! ::)
