Duender build
« on: July 11, 2026, 11:40:02 AM »
I was looking at making my home brew 3D printer better by adding linear rails to replace the bars which have served until now.
I was thinking a needed a cheap and cheerful one to print any parts I might need and noticed someone not too far away selling a couple of creality cr10's all in bits and pieces for a reasonable price.

That of course has changed the situation so now I am going to build a complete replacement machine while keeping mine current one intact to print any parts. So far I have managed to arrange the extrusions in such a way that I only need to cut a few bits.
I will need to make or purchase a few corner brackets to keep everything square and rigid but the plan is to keep the front top free of any beams.
I have ended up with an opening of 460mm square so I may increase the bed size at some point in the future from its current 300X300.

Frame is pretty much figured out and it is going to be a triple Z like my current one but I would like a double hot end on this one.
Rather than go to the expense of linear rails for the Z's I am going with the cr10 wheels, this may change later but I can't see any reason it wont be acceptable.

I would guess the v wheels will be fine . There's little to no forces moving them around and they work fine for most bed slingers.

I must get on with my dual hot end for the frog spawn , I put it away last year and have yet to start again

Things have got slightly more complicated I was thinking I would just download the STL's from the duender github and that would be it but alas unless I want to do some resizing (which I don't if I can help it)
First thing is I decided to hang the corexy steppers off the back rather then inside the printer which would be fine but not when the belt adjusters are printed to the STL's both things will make the machine too big to fit into the cubby hole made for it (pictured with my current one in position. Or rather it would fit in just about but I wouldn't be able to close the sliding doors which protect it from dust etc kicked up by other activities.
So I am faced with the decision to move the steppers inside or redesign the front belt adjusters, moving the steppers might be the better option but I was quite pleased that some of the hardware from the CR10's would fit them just right off the back.
