I will look into the use of Hydrochloric acid as an etchant , but I think it needs to be concentrated and will only work on steel , I could be wrong .

Yer Steve , lots of thin steel parts ,like the reed valves of a pulse jet are etched .

Rob, do you think electrochemical etching would work for a steel nameplate? You only use salt for that.

I learned electrochemical etching from Bruce Simpson a dozen years ago from his old website. I just did a lookup and found he has a new video on Youtube that goes into very good detail about the whole process. Here:

Yer ,Steve , there is a professional system for etching say a company brand onto an item that uses similar .

This video shows a steel belt buckle being salt water/electro etched to good depth of relief.

A similar salt electrolytic process is often used by bespoke knife makers to etch a design onto the blade,but they use a cotton pad electrode similar to the vid Rob posted.....OZ.

Yer doing OK , well had a slight blip the other week and ended up in A&E

but thats another story

So looking to get back on with this this weekend , yes forged TEE bolts would be nice ,along with a good few other bits of tooling i could name . The main ,well one of the main reasons for the
forge ,like the furnace is to recycle material that would normally be thrown out . doing my tree hugging bit

Thought I would do a bit more to this project today , I fabricated the square to round transition piece for the end of the blower and also welded on a bolt flange .

Well mine did for many years - I even put it on locking castors to pull it out of the foundry into the garden. With the blower, and a blow lamp it was the fastest starting bbq I've ever had !!!!

Made a start on the ash dump today ,plasma cut the parts from 6mm and 12 mm stainless . On my state of the art plasma table LOL .

Was that freehand Rob, or did you make a template? I rarely use my Plasma cutter as I make such a bosh of cutting to a line

I did cut a sheet metal template out just to save marking two out .

So you drew it in Bocad - do you have a CNC mill to cut it or what? My plasma torch needs quite an offset from the cut line due to the (??18mm) diameter of the torch, so how did you follow a template that appears to be true size?

(Or is the bottle of Merlot I'm drinking interfering with my thought processes - it's certainly affecting the typing

)

I was taking the piss Andrew BobCam = RobCam ,

I drew the profile out on a bit sheet metal , then drew round the sheet metal template with chalk (twice) ,then followed the chalk lines with the plasma cutter free hand .
