my craftex mill won't start
« on: February 12, 2013, 02:17:58 AM »
I bought this mill just before xmas and it worked great but I think I may have killed its magnetic switch. I didn't have coolant on it so I put one together using a aquarium pump and picked up a flexible hose it has a magnet in its base so the best place to stick it is under the switchbox..... and it has not run since the fuse is fine but we changed it anyway and there is power to the wall socket! so what do you think can a magnet kill a magnetic switch?

Its a nice size and should handle anything I need!

and this is killer!

and I put it right about where those two screws are.

 I suppose it is just conceivable that the nearby magnet might have opposed the solenoid in the switch relay so that the relay contacts wouldn't close. But all would be well again once the magnet was removed.

I know it's a bit elementary, but are there any safety switches on the chuck guards etc which might be open? And once the big red emergency stop has been operated, do you have to push it in and turn it (it seems to have arrows embossed on it) before you can restart?

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Tom,
Have you tried the obvious and removed the mag base?

Have you disturbed the wiring inside the housing at all (perhaps to feed your pump) ?

When my Chester V16 died it was Both the fuses in the box that had gone after a crash
Turned out tobe one of the fuse holders shorted to earth, i replaced it and all has been fine
ever after. Not the same machine but close.

 :ddb:

I've fixed my mill I took off the panel again today and checked for any power there was none even at the fuse. I pulled the fuse out and saw that there was plastic sticking higher than the contact so I cut it down a bit put it back in and it fired up so the magnetic base didn't have anything to do with it it just happened at the same time   thanks to all that gave  their suggestions

glad that you have it sorted,  rubbish fuse holder

I did doubt that the mag base could have caused it as when it was on steel it would be the same as a keep on the base , no external field
