Using grinder to accurately radius HSS
« on: May 04, 2025, 06:58:03 AM »
Morning all

I was just hoping someone may be able to offer some suggestions. I’ve got a Worden grinder and haven’t had it long. I am looking to put a fairly accurate radius on the corner of a piece of HSS and just wondered if anyone had any ideas how to do this.

In my head I’m thinking about some sort of tool holding jig that will rotate on a pin - almost like a lathe tool post that hasn’t been screwed down. Or perhaps a better example being a ball turner. I just can’t think how to accurately align and the proper method of feed etc. Any help would be appreciated. It is going to be used to create a form tool for my clock making projects so I’m happy to put time into creating a quality jig. The radius will only be small - say between 0.5-2mm so it needs to be a fairly accurate method. This HSS will be used to profile the clock wheel tooth on the cutter.

I’ve been experimenting with wheel cutting for years so I am aware of lots of different methods. I just think I’d like to have a go at this as my previous attempts at the “button” method and also hand grinding to a template are not great.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you really need +/- 5um?

If not,  then radius gauges and magnifying glass would probably get you there.

Otherwise, look at the design of grinder angle dressers and how they suspend the work piece above the rotating axis .

Positioning the work is the hardest part of the job.

A single lip grinder like a Deckel or one of its clones (like Alexander) will do this easily and accurately.

Thank you for the vid, that is super helpful. Whilst I couldn’t come up from under the grinding wheel on my setup, I could do similar from the side?

Pete - thanks also for your suggestion. I have looked up a few vids on YouTube and I’m struggling to see if I could arrange this setup on my Worden. I’ll keep looking.

Thanks again everyone and any other thoughts would be welcome.
