tidying up my churchill redman CM lathe

after picking up this lathe for £224 from ebay and getting it home it became apparent that it needed some TLC before use.
as we had to break it down to get it in the workshop ( the whole lot must weigh nearly a ton and i only have a normal door to get it through) i thought id tackle that before i re-assembled it.
so heres what it looked like from the ad:-

bit of a rare beast as no one seems to know anything about it. came with a 3 and 4 jaw chuck and a faceplate
the paint job was awful, under the white was a hammerite blue, under that a dark blue, under that was a kaki type green then under that a dark greenish blue. so thats the colour ive painted it after stripping back to bare metal and painting with red oxide.

fortunately the previous owner had covered all the bed ways etc with grease so there wasnt any more than a few light patches to remove.
the gearbox had had the lid off at some point and there was an inch of water under the very tired looking oil. the gears didnt look to bad themselves but needed a clean.

the headstock casing was then stripped back to cast (5ltr can for scale)

gears cleaned up a bit and the clutch adjusted as someone had over adjusted it and it no longer locked into drive.

then the bed, headstock, stand, chip pan and carriage were primed and painted

havent got pics of the apron before but needless to say it was the same story in there as the headstock. the apron is supposed to have oil in but some one had decided that grease was better

Nice tidy job on the paintwork and its good to see an old machine being brought up to spec for use. I hope you get many years enjoyment from it. The Lathes website has some info on the Cub series of lathes but nothing on the CM series. It might be worth emailing Tony (lathes.co.uk) to ask if has any idea where you can get info?

Yeah I emails him and he ask for photos. As soon as it's back together ill fire some off.
Be good to find some info on it. The serial number has 6 digits 4 together then 2 , those last 2 are 37, could that be the year of manufacture?

Nice big chunky lathe. The ways look to be in superb condition.

Yeah it's bigger than I thought but I've been told a big lathe is never a problem but you can have one too small. There is some wear and marks on the ways to be fair but most  seem to be under the chuck so shouldn't be an issue. I think most of the work this lathe has done has been on the faceplate rather than the chuck.
Need a quick change tool post and some cutting tools so I'm on the look out
Also need to decide what I'm doing regarding the motor.

still got to decide what to do with the hand wheels and levers. not sure whether to make new from stainless or chemically blacken them, they have some pits in them so not sure that polishing will work very well.
cant wait to get started now.
i have a couple of guide bushes to make for the apron as one was missing and the other was quite worn. they hold and guide the feed shaft. they are made from brass or bronze so should be a good first project.
