Soon be Christmas & we can have some nuts.....
« on: October 29, 2010, 05:28:12 PM »

A quicky made up from bits out of the scrap box. The thread is a bit slow (7/16" x 18), if I make another it'll be with a coarser pitch.
At least it works and I can now take the Molegrips back out the workshop...

Well Mark we seem to have lost all that info you linked to last week

Any chance you could re-post it please. I'm not ready to make rope knurls myself yet, but that's not to say that others aren't?

Lost all my fine jovial and witty posts too (well, I thought they were  :) )

Yup. We lost some posts. Lost my recent backups as well.

Sorry guys. Not my fault though... Hosting company blew this one.

Missing links - Fred's 'FRETS' site for making the rope knurls http://www.frets.com/HomeShopTech/Projects/RopeKnurl/ropeknurl.html
but check out the rest of the stuff there, keep you busy for a while!
One of the threads on PM re knurling - http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/antique-machinery-history/factory-made-center-dividers-112807/, scroll down for an image of some i've made.
There are several other threads on the subject, do a search for 'knurls' or 'knurling' in the Antique Machinery section.

I really like this project. Any chance of seeing a view from the side?

Bolster -Here's a couple of other views.

I sorted the biggest walnut nut in the bag and found a lump of bronze big enough (pintal from a large water valve).
I bored the hole off centre to give a bit more metal for the thread, also cut a few grooves on the inside to grip the nut.
Finished size is 55mm OD x 38mm ID x 18mm Thick.
