My Little Rocking Engine.

After some 6 weeks or so, I thought it was about time I showed my little rocking engine build.......

Where to start? The cylinder! 3/4" brass bar, 10mm reamer, only.

Work out depth of milled recess + bore depth + drill depth + a bit for wriggling......

Off we go.......

Realise afterwards, 4 small flats would help with the vice work!

Got it right, just, on second attempt......  :thumbup:


Made a start on the flywheel......

Had no suitable brass, so made it from parts of a filing cabinet, a la Mr Hill.

Here it is acting as a 1/8" spacer, while I drill the conrod.

There is always something that gets in the way!  :bang:

I should be making a start on mine this week. Need to remember to bring in drawings to print, got milling machine and vice to bolt down then I'm away!

I won`t be posting a carport rebuild log. But here`s a few pics.......

Pulling out some 250+ serrated 70mm long nails.

All cleared & top surfaces painted with waxoyl...... Cos I`d got a can of it, doing nothing....

This is the third time of roofing, due to the plastic turning brittle.
I realised I would be around 75yrs old by next time...... We`ll do it with steel instead!

Can you imagine the chaos..... Mrs Drillin & me, only..... Combined age of almost 130...... Fitting roof sheets in the breezy flyaway conditions of a British summer......  :bang:

But, no accidents to speak of..... All done..... Time to clean up.

Nice start to your rocker David  :thumbup:   (note.... Get mine started again! )


The cylinder MkII seems to have been modified to take a different mounting style?



Looks like you had fun with the roof  :)

Been there done it as part of the current job....  Not much fun at 34 either!!  (Still got to replace my workshop roof, been avoiding that one!!)

Now all you need is a nice facia in PVC and you''ll not have to climb a ladder to it for a long time!  :thumbup:

Good start with the rocker David  :headbang: , and nice recovery x2  (one rocker & one roof !) I Wonder which of the recoveries were easier  :lol:

You're reminding me of some things I need to do as well.... Another Rocker (My one sister wants one for her birthday!, so no  :scratch: on what to give her  :lol:), and paint my workshop roof with insulating paint before summer hits here in Namibia  :)

Darren, the fascia board is only 2yrs old, in pressure treated timber.
A rub down with a wire brush & a nice coat of waxoyl should see it good for many years yet.

I prefer the look of genuine timber, to plastic......

Connected my little compressor & nothing happened!

Shot of WD40.... Nothing!

Application of a few choice words...... A few half hearted turns.

Out of vice...... Turned in all directions, on the end of the airline...... Steady, 100 piffing rpm!!!!!     YEE HAARR!!!!!!  :ddb: :ddb: :ddb:

Immediately phoned my pal........ "Listen to this"!!!!!....... He`s a gardener....... Was up a tree, with a chainsaw at the time.  ::)

He was impressed!  :thumbup:

Right! Time to carry on with making it into an engine......  :thumbup:

Machined some fins & reduced the diameter between ends, for the pipe nozzle. But kept the scrap end connected for chucking purposes.

This is where the 1/8" cutter walked out of the collet.......  :bang:

Yes, John B, yer were right....... The cutter shank is tapered.......  :scratch:

I finished off by using a mandrel in the bore, to finish machine the head/ airline end.


Next up was the flywheel. Bought some 1/4" brass, and relegated the steel flywheel to be the base.

Wasn`t too sure how to go about things...... So I turned a blank & drew on it with marker pen, then traced it round, a few thou` deep with 2mm endmill, noting the positions/ settings......

Drill out the corners, to ease the hockey stick effect.

The components had been assembled/ parted more times than  a lego set, so were no longer a press fit. It needs the crank throw fixing with a grub screw.

.100" wide...... 2mm screw.....

I had trouble to get mine to run at first too. But finally got it going. Runs real nice now. And like you I need to finish the base.

It was me on about the plastic.... I know a lot of people still like the old wood finish...... Some of that there coated plastic looks pretty similar to me from 10' away though  :lol:

It`s only coming from Bridlington, some 85 miles away. "Shipped" exactly 7 days ago!

I`ve had parcels arive in Aus / NZ inside 6 days!  :bang:

Meanwhile, the engine is sitting beside me computer, like a little orphan...... Waiting......  :(

Well, I guess you`ve all read about the .9mm allen key that wasn`t...... And cost me some £13+  :bang: :bang:

Jimmy O has lent me one to be going on with. So, lets get on with it!  :D

This is the shortened pedestal. I think it looks more in proportion than original to drawing....
Also I fitted a tiny washer to stop the conrod rubbing on the crank face. It made quite a difference to the revs.

Finally this afternoon`s vid.   ::)

The sun was much too bright. Then the compressor started leaking oil down the pipe & slowing the engine.

I originally had 2500rpm. Now slowed to around 1500rpm.

Sorry about the strobe effect on the flywheel..... Listen to the sound to get some idea of speed.......

The strobing can't be helped much with the cameras, they all do it at one point or another.... All to do with the frames per second Etc...... 


Good enough vid' for me David, very nice looking little fella..... I must get some shop time in and see if I can make a spoked flywheel!

I'm still a bit slow on that one!
