Well I had to bite..... I just couldn't resist any longer!!  ::)



Here is a teaser.... Since I'm going on a mini holiday on Thursday to Sunday, Tuesday is pool night and Wednesday is packing etc.... There will be no further advancements till at least next week  :bugeye:

I just had to get my head around a few things before I started....

Yes John I know it's bronze.... Only cause of the way it's presented with the black twist in it.... Oh, and the way it machines. Comes off in swirls and curls not sintered stuff like brass  :thumbup:


I like the bronze look when polished, plus a bronze cyl with a brass piston might wear better?

There is going to be some ali in there somewhere too, possibly a bit of stainless? it's all up in the air at the mo'  :)




Now, The flywheel..... I think it would be a bit silly to try the cutouts on such a small piece.... But I might try on a donor part first.... See about a bit of confidence!
(I do already have a flywheel plan  :thumbup: )








Robert.... Tie clasp? It'd really distort your tie.... It's pretty heavy  :headbang:

I think with this little nodder, the more wear, the smoother it runs. They will in fact run on breath power, and a clapped out old codger like me can only manage about 1 psi lung power. Now get a bagpipe player, they can push out up to 4 psi, the thing would take off.

Do I detect a little bit of yellow clucking bird there. Just get the flywheel made on the RT and be done with it.

Very disappointed Bogs.

Stonking good job mate. What a neat little idea threading the two together and machining as one....would never have thought of that and it looks really unique! Also, fantastic shape.... that ball turner comes in useful.

Glad you like it so far. I've no idea when the next bit will turn up?

I love the contrast between the materials, it looks better IMHO as the tarnish starts to set in..... you can really see the difference then.




Chris, the ball turner (as some might have guessed?!) is my favourite tooling addition..... I just love the shapes I can get.... Well worth the day or so's project time IMHO.


No fight here Stew.... Just thinking of getting this one to run without a wobbly flywheel..... I hope I've been paying attention to all the right posts?!?!



Yep John, getting my eye in.... Now, if only I could rustle up a machinists brain I'd be sorted! For what I do have in my mind I'm gonna need to use a good brain, a very good one!! ::)   It'll probably turn out very different to what I envisage.... As it so often does. I believe that's called "unique"?  :lol:

Placing it up on a pedestal gives a much nicer view to it, the up standing tall and proud theme.

Over 120 days since last post..... And then some!

Apologies for my huge absence from general forum life.... I've been a little preoccupied building my house and fixing my car.... Both almost qualify for full time job status!  :lol:  I've managed a few hours in the workshop here and there but have failed to post the pic's, call it lazy if you wish  :coffee:

So. I've decided to resurrect this thread with some piccies I've been hoarding and a few that were just last week....

Right, last picture was of the column being test fitted to the cylinder.

Now that's where the body parts stopped and the moving parts began....

The piston. Take one part stainless steel and one part brass and silver solder together...

Now make it into a pleasing shape... and drill a hole for the crank pin.

Then drill and tap the crown of the piston before parting off. Attach to an arbour and shape as you feel like.

Solder it all together and give it a little clean up...

Now the base was intended to be a visual delight.... Maybe intended but not quite as I'd have liked. I may re-design this in the future?

I started with a few pieces of 1/2" hex stock. Thinking of the different materials and contrast theme I used brass stainless and aluminium bronze.... This is where the issues started!

Let it be know (not that many wouldn't have this knowledge already..... Aluminium bronze does NOT soft solder!


So. Not to be discouraged the next evening I salvaged what I could from the disaster and tried again using all brass and stainless.

There was a slight size discrepancy between the stainless and the brass so it wasn't quite as neat as I was shooting for. But it's not bad.... Proves the theory for the design. Just a bit hard to hold it all together and squeeze the molten solder out of the cracks.

Mounted on an arbour (well... An arbour made from a chuck adapter for my lathe chucks!) I set to work on it with my favourite piece of tooling   :dremel:

Well what can I say, it was worth the wait. That looks absolutely stunning Ralph :clap: :clap: :clap: :clap: I love every part and especially the base. I've done similar type of glued-together assembly in my woodturning days, using contrasting woods, but my hat is well and truly off for you.

I wonder if you could encapsulate those different material hex bars in epoxy resin, with a bit of a band round them to keep them together mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
