Slinder Rod Turning Steady

When I made my tiny engine I made use of a commercially bought slender rod turning steady I gather from some of the comments that these are not easily acquired so I decided to make one:-

Made from standard stock size bar with a 1/4" Square HSS tool

It manufacture is quite simple so I won't go into to many details.

To ensure that the bush was on the centre with the tool

I first measured the tool height and stamped it on the steady so I could get back after a tool grind

I then carefully set the tool on centre height and on centre.

Locked the cross slide up and with tools in the head stock drilled out for the bush.

All that remained was to make a support bush.

It's on my list of things to make, but seeing as I still haven't gotten my lathe operational (or even off the floor...  ) since we moved 2 years ago... It may still be a while yet.

Amazing tool and I can imagine that coming in very hand for turning down the ends of clock wheel pivots to a uniform size!! Thanks for sharing.

Its the same lathe I've always used, Chester 3 in 1 with the milling bit removed.

Yes all good thanks - I changed role at work and my little girl is 6 now and boy 2 so I have nothing like the time I use to have and then moved house in September just gone so really still getting my workshop sorted. It is interesting you are still using the Chester. This boxford of mine needs some TLC that I haven`t got time to give it. Looking to get something new on a reasonably tight budget. Everyone keeps trying to put me off an Asian made lathe but then I don`t feel I have the funds to buy something second hand, British, that I can buy with confidence and don`t want to take a gamble on something! Decisions.

Just seen your handy work on the Homemade Forum. What an excellent way to make accurate shaft from larger stock. That will go into my "must make to-do folder".
