CNC Belt Covers for a Ducati
« on: January 12, 2015, 12:37:59 PM »
Its been a while since I posted anything, my excuse is I've been moving house and consequently workshop, I'm making these as a test piece, these are for a mate's Ducati 900ss, he's turning into a Café Racer, should be a nice bike when its all finished, these are the first things made with the CNC miller at the new house, its been an absolute nightmare moving all my equipment, however at least its all up an running now.
This one is the smaller of the two and is made from 5083 20mm Aluminium plate the other part is quite a bit bigger and will be made from 38mm plate.....

I converted this miller to PC control back in 2004, it now runs Mach 3 and or LinuxCNC depending on mood and what I'm machining........

Any questions or comments welcome.

Shaun.

Beautiful work Shaun!  Does your mill have servos or steppers?

You speak Mach3 and LinuxCNC both....WOW!  You must have very strong computer Kung-Fu!

Nice. Was just thinking about building up an air cooled Ducati!

In a former life I worked for a big Telco designing very large networks running Unix.
Mach3 is the easy option but with less option for customisation, my Hurco miller runs brushed Servos 100Vdc, driven by Gecko controllers, for the X.Y.Z. axis the 4th runs a stepper, I have home made breakout boards, and relay boards, all drawn by hand with a resist pen!! the only reason I did it this way, was at the time none where available off the shelf, I originally ran TurboCNC, and EMC until Mach came along.

This is the second part of the belt Ducati covers, in fact this is the main section, machined from 38mm 5083 billet plate, its taken approx 3 hrs. machining time, 90% of the machining was carried out with a 3/8th x 1 LS tip radius cutter, the machining lines although visible are pretty much undetectable by touch, which sort of feels a bit spooky......

If you bead blast it, no one will know you cheated and failed to cast it :)

Really nice design you made there. Please post a picture once it is installed.

Fabulously Groovy!

Do you keep up with The Bike Shed on Facebook? - If not you should - you deserve a showing there.

Dutch from the Bike shed contacted me a couple of years ago now, about featuring one of my bikes, but I never got round to sorting it out, I got involved with the new project below so it just never happened........

I've done a load of work on the bike recently, so the websites under construction because it need updating, and I'm in the process of moving hosts so it may go off line for a while.........

Stunning, just stunning - I love the overall X profile. Raw engineering. It must be immensely rigid, it'll handle like a dream.

Promise that you will let us know when it goes on display at a rally because I want to see it in the metal.

Shaun

I'm not a bike man but after seeing you design and machine like this I could be very easily converted. That is just so incredible. I'll be watching for more.   :D :D

Cheers
