Title: Machinerys handbooks anyone collect them?
Post by: bry1975 on August 19, 2011, 05:48:56 AM
Any of you chaps collect Industrial press machinery's handbooks? Just wondering how much the editions vary as thinking about buying the latest one but might buy the older 25th edition the one I sold.  :(

I believe the early ones had info about casting etc, that has been dropped out over the years to fit newer technology.

I don't collect them as I have a older version from the 30's that was given to me, and a newer version that wife had when she was doing the CAD. Plus the best parts are  are here in Machinery's Handbook Pocket Companion as it is a lot lighter (http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=23.0)   They have really no monetary value other than, what the used book seller can get for them. From .50¢ up to a couple bucks for none current editions at the local booksellers. the one will no longer pay anything for them and I have seen people leave them in the free box outside the door.

On occasion, I’ve seen the older ones in antique stores and on eBay for up to $20.

Check your local library for used book sales.  I regularly pick up  copies for less than $5.

I have got the 24th edition,1992, from Amazon.
Cost me £18 but well worth it.
They have got one on now from the States for £7.74 plus £2.80 postage.

Unless you are after the latest technology the older ones are better because they have real information about engineering, not pages and pages about dilythium crystals and warp factor 11...in my humble opinion

My favourite book on how-to's has got illustrations of men working in munitions factories but no date so I reckon its early First World War before the men were called up and the women went into the factories. :bugeye:

:D Yer I know what you mean bought a few engineering books like that one flick through and never used again!
The Smithells reference book I bought back in my 20s was kinda like that, no one will buy it so I just use it now and again must weigh about 5 or 10pounds

An example of info 99% of us will never use or really understand.

I think if you read and study the pages before and after that diagram you may learn how and when to use that information.  :D :D

It is a Eutectic diagram for Bismuth and something.

The 100% something has a melting ponit of 327 deg C  left hand side.

100% bismuth has a melting point of 271deg C right hand side

With 55.5% bismuth and the rest something else has the lowest melting point 125deg C

Very useful diagrams.

Especially if I tell you the something else is Lead

Mine came in a Gerstner machinist toolbox wrapper.

I picked up a vintage Gerstner machinist #11 from craigslist.  Loaded with tools and a Machinerys Handbook.  Had the owners name and "Christmas 1963" written in the front cover...

I love stuff like that!!!

I figured it was about $3500 worth of stuff in that box if I went out and bought it all new  :bugeye:
