Building a tool and cutter grinding center
Chuck in E. TN:
I have built Harold Hall’s Deluxe Grinding Table, http://www.homews.co.uk/page145.html, and am slowly setting up my grinding station. I am also working on the accessories for the table. I have built the lathe tool jig, and the round tool jig, and am working on the drill bit jig.
I purchased a dedicated bench grinder for this setup. On it, I have mounted a diamond taper cup wheel (for carbide), and a aluminum oxide straight cup wheel (for HHS).
One thing Mr. Hall did not include in his books (at least in those I have) is a jig to hold a single point diamond dressing tool, for Aluminum Oxide wheels, that will work with his Deluxe Grinding table.
Has anyone here built this table? What custom jigs did you come up with? Do you have a jig for a single point diamond dresser?
I’ve seen dresser jigs advertised and written about on woodworking sites and some of them set the single point diamond pointing directly toward the center of the wheel, some point the diamond downward at 10 degrees to the center of the wheel. Which is best?
I want to build a diamond dressing tool jig from CRS to work with Mr. Hall’s table. Any advice or pictures of your setups would be appreciated.

I have made the table for dressing use the round tool holder , and lower the angle of the table to almost level or square to the wheel , I use a diamond impregnated dish wheel and have never had to dress it .

I realise that this thread has been dorment for some months but my website statistics show that people from this forum are still visiting my website and from this page.
Regarding a toolholder for a single point dresser I see no reason why the round toolholder cannot be used for the task. I personally use it with a multi diamond dresser as can be seen on Photo 14 for my pages on using the rest here, http://www.homews.co.uk/page224.html . From this page navigate to the one with Photo 14 on it.

Hi Metalman, I noticed on Model engine builder forum that one member is currently building one of the Harold Hall deluxe tool grinding jigs and he is using the round tool holder as you suggest to dress the wheel......OZ.
Manxmodder:
Metalman,my apologies for not realising sooner that you are THE Harold Hall who designed those excellent grinding jigs and wrote several books on engineering subjects
I have a couple of your books, tool& cutter sharpening and Dividing. I find them easy to read and packed with useful tips and information.
Planning to make the deluxe version tool and cutter jig in the near future.....OZ.
