In his book "Lathework, a complete course", Harold Hall has written an excellent description on how to make your own distance (gauge) blocks of precisely the type shown by Arbalist.  The book cost around £7 at the time which is well worth its money.

Yesh.. I have the book, but I still droll after a cheap set of round gauge blocks. I would have bough them when I visited last time states, but they had no metric. Instead I got one metric set, bigger and square.

I wish there were semi decent and affordable gage clamp/anvil set, something like this to start with:

Then I started testing my bore gauge against gauge blocks and bearing rings....Not extremely happy with my results. When winter comes and I can spare some extra days I need to collect my samples, log measurements and take the whole lot to a friend who has better gauge set, more accessories and more experience using them. Then I should know confidently how much of error is me, how much the kit and how much the parts.

Gauge blocks are pretty cheap for how much uncertainty you can take out of your measurement instruments. Then again gauge rings are pretty damn expensive. I am really, really, hard pressed to buy some bearings and use them for setting boregauge and as a reference.

Those Enco ones are currently only $50 which is around £30 at the moment, bargain!
I guess these type of gauges are made in the Far East for the American market?
All we need is some enterprising UK vendor to get some metric ones ordered up for us!

I would like to get set or two. I like then cheap, therefore I could have plenty of them and use for setups. High quality gauges are expensive and being cheap I would not use them for anything else than metrology.

I did a lot of searching, even among Chinese manufacturers, but just can't find any round metric versions similar to the spacer block set shown. I did find brand names attached to those: Swiss Precision Instrument (SPI) and Bestool.

I'd be interested in a metric set too, as I have a lathe with gauge trays and imperial blocks... Group purchase perhaps?

Probably the only way we'll get these is if a dealer like Arceurotrade or Chronos decide to stock them. Depends on how many they'd have to order from the Chinese though ...

I did Matthew, thanks. Postage could be a deal breaker but in addition I quite like the round ones as they can be bolted together. Having said that I've got a small set (Mic checking) of the standard type and they are nice to "wring" together!
