Replacing Bearings in a Bench Grinder
« on: August 31, 2013, 08:06:06 AM »
Hi Guys
I am attempting to remove the bearings in a bench grinder, and have struck problem. There is a  1/8  inch dia. roll pin driven into a blind hole in the shaft with only 85 thou protruding. I have tried the obvious pliers with nil success. Has anyone any bright ideas?

                                                 Cheers David

Mole grips
Drill behind it and punch it out
Weld a nut on to it

Grind or file level with surface of shaft. Remove shaft. Drill from back side of blind hole and punch out pin.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the mole to no avail, and decided to drill from the rear and punch the roll pin out. I set the shaft up in the dividing head on the mill, and found the center using a small drill, started the machine and just entered the hole to check running clear.  I stopped the mill withdrew the center drill and noticed a small bright witness on the roll pin, it was soft, what luck! so I drilled it out from the front. Then I set up again for the other roll pin, no such luck it was hard, progress was slow but the HSS drill was harder than the pin, and I just managed to drill it out before completely blunting the drill. Think I will replace the pins with silver steel pins.  Another job done.

                                                            Cheers  David
