Questions on the LH Sparey Dividing head |
(1/3) > >> |
Chuck in E. TN:
I’m working away making patterns to cast the major parts of LH Sparey’s dividing head that several people are building. My version will hopefully be used on my MicroMark 7x14 Lathe and my X2 mill. I have no problem (yet) visualizing how it will be used on the X2, but the lathe is giving me problems. Has anyone built this DH for use on the SEIG 7x lathes? How do you use it? Can you post a picture of your setup? My current idea is to build the DH at center height for the lathe and include 2 v-notches for the ways, at 90° to each other, and slots on each end for T-bolts for use on the mill. But then I thought if I’m going to line bore it on the lathe (first such project) I need to locate it on the cross slide. Some guidance please? Maybe make the base as a separate bolt on? Chuck |

Hi Chuck It needs to be mounted on the cross slide on the lathe So it can be offset to drill say a hole pattern Mounting it on the ways would just replicate the tail stock Regards John |

Chuck, I envisage using the dividing head in stead of the top slide, as in the photo in my thread, reply no8. http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,8775.msg97296.html#new I don't know what the MicroMark 7x14, but the idea is to be able to mount the work in the dividing head on the cross slide so that the centre line of the lathe and the work are at the same height. The cross-slide allows you to adjust the distance from the tool to the centre of the job. I hope that helps! Regards, Matthew |

Matt, The MicroMark is a re-badged SEIG 7x14. Has a similar cross slide to yours with no T-Slots. i know I can use the DH on the mill for cutting gears and such.I was trying to figure out if it's worth the trouble to get it to fit on the lathe other than for boring the body for the spindle. I think my best bet for now is to make the body fit the cross slide for the line boring and make riser blocks for the mill as you are doing. I'll worry about using it on the lathe later. Chuck |

Well, I'm remaking the pattern for the body of the DH to fit on my cross slide in place of the compound. I'm going to mae a separate riser block to put it on the mill table. Version # 2, lol. Reguarding the pins used in the split pattern, I drill the holes for the pins before spliting, right? Chuck |
