Making a Medieval Helmet
« on: July 28, 2013, 12:03:00 PM »

Finally got this done. It took a bit longer than I expected and then I had to duck out for a month and a bit for my finals. It's in two parts becuase my rubbish computer couldn't handle the video editing software. All that fast forwards footage eats up more memory than I have and there's a few anomalies as a result (two still images show up as black frames).

Excuses excuses. Hope it's enjoyable!

Thanks for the comments. And thanks for the help and advise I got throughout all this. I'm especially thankful for the refractory cement, Rob. I've still got a load left and i'll hopefully be making use of it shortly for a metal casting setup.

That is an insane amount of hammering.

Hi Simon, I think it turned out great  :clap:and excellent videos too  , to be honest old world type things are better with all the imperfections and doing the lining up and rivet holes etc by eye rather than being exact with veriniers etc, if you had made it without any small imperfections it would look machine made and not as good.
You were right about the Yellow pages these days too lol. I wouldnt be too disapointed about the grinding stage taking longer, you will have learnt loads from this helmet and all you seem to need is a better version of what you built and now you know it would be worth the effort too. Well done all round

  Cheers Mick.

That was fascinating!

Truly a work of art, in the old sense of the word.
And one of the finest videos I've seen, too.
Congratulations!

I'm doing a BSc in chemistry.

Really the hammering wasn't as tedious as it looked in the video. Most of the time I was just excited that I was managing to make progress. Even when it looked like a wobbly hub cap it was at least proof that it was working and that I was getting somewhere.

That's a lot of work, some of it with modern tools.

Makes you appreciate the work involved in making hundreds of those back in the days they were needed in anger.
Tools: Boxford CSB lathe, Chester 20v mill, Portamig 185. Lots of ideas, No motivation.

That was interesting, amusing and good to watch.  I'm glad you overcame the many challenges that would have made a lot of people throw their hands up in the air and flick on the telly.  Good to see you didn't seriously injure yourself either.  Although, I have set myself on fire with a 9" grinder twice now  :zap:

That is an interesting little furnace you have there and I'd like to see/hear more about it sometime.

Finally - just curious how long that took you from start to finish?  I'm not planning to make one myself but I am curious as to how much time we have before you amass your army and set forth on a quest of world domination.

I'm kicking myself for not timing it, to be honest. Other people have said it takes them about 60 hours to make a similar helmet, and that time seems about right. But that doesn't take into account the time spent building other stuff. From start to finish on collecting materials and reading about stuff, it's been about 6 months. Thats alot of time for a wobbly helmet but I learned a fair bit along the way.

I've got a few videos on making that forge starting here. They're a bit slower paced than my newer videos though so I hope you can stomach lots of footage of grinding and very crude welding.

It's pretty much the same as the one in this article by Eric Thing though. Although I simplified it a bit.

Yeah some of those would be great. I'd been using the old ones as a hearth before I cut them up.

Will you be in next weekend?

I watched the videos today and I was very impressed, both with the standard of the work and your self taught skills.

Well done.
