Clare collet holder help!
« on: April 01, 2013, 04:17:00 PM »
I've recently picked up a CLARE A490 (size A) boxed collet chuck set, in very good condition. It contains 3 imperial collets, and a 1MT collet, and the collet chuck has a 2MT shaft with a female threaded end.
Firstly, does anyone know the shaft end thread size? (I have got this to use on my Centec mill as it has a lower height to the table than my Clarkson collet chuck, but I need to know the correct thread so I can make a new drawbar).
Secondly, can someone confirm the correct way to insert the cutters and tighten them in? (The collets accept plain shank cutters, or old ones with a tang at the end, and the collets have a thread to screw to the end cap. The end cap also screws to the main body. However, there is also a washer in the box. Is this part of the set, and if so, how does is it used?)
Any help would be appreciated - Thanks - Andy

For MT2 it is either 10 mm or 3\8 Whitworth for a draw bar .

Anyway, my bit ... When I got the S7 I had some Clare Collets, no use to me, I sent them to a member of M E C H

He lives in Lincoln IIRC.

So Andy, I don't know if you are registered there, but at least one geezer on there uses them ...

( Unless he wanted them for catapult ammo or something )

Not much, I know ...  :(  but it may help ..

I have a few modest talents. Knowing what I'm doing isn't one of them.

I've got to have something to do on my trips around the sun. Beside that, it helps to keep your mind sharp and your wit quick which is a good thing, I think!
