AMA16 Mill - Motor
« on: December 23, 2012, 08:40:48 AM »
I have been rather occupied with other things the past weeks...

Finally got back in to the Work Shop and started to make the Simple (Gear type) Dividing head from the Workshop Practice book.

Top and base are milled square.
4 Holes in the base drilled
20mm slot cut - Motor was quite warm so gave it a rest for 1/2 hr.

Started to drill the large hole 4mm - 10 mm then 14mm and I popped the Motor.
If a motor didn't warm up it'd not work - It was to hot to touch.

I said something like "Bother"

No I wasn't being stoopid.
Yes it was in low gear
Yes the Drill was (and still is)  Sharp.
Holding it at 300 RPM or so for the 14mm drill in 2" steel seemed about right to me.

I was so looking forwards to getting the engine project underway again over the break.

Does anyone keep these motors in Stock ? Bonus points for them being in the South East (I'm in Essex) and open tomorrow.
240 Volt

Thanks

Alex.

You could try ringing Amadeal tomorrow. They are in Leytonstone. Full address and phone numbers here http://www.amadeal.co.uk/index.html .

Andy

PS With the power off, it might be an idea to check the brushes in the motor and also whether you can rotate it by hand. .

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Hi.

Thanks for your info....

Brushes Checked.
Motor rotates fine.

I have popped the Armeture - it's the motor 100%
Also smells rather bad - like not just warm bad.....

Applying power, the motor rotates a bit, sparks and pops the 10A fuse / Blows the Trip and Workshop RCD.

I'm in the process of attaching the work to a Virgin Myford face plate.
It's never been out of it's brown paper and is listed on the 1953 Invoice !

Ok - i'm new to this faceplate lark.
Never ever used one.....

Is this the way to do it ?
Material is 2" X 2" X 108mm Steel.
It's WAY of center as you can see.

Time to pull in the Back Gear (Also never used by me)  and keep things VERY slow.

The task is to complete the Hole (14mm Drill)> that's the easier bit....
Then to open the 14mm Hole to 28 mm X 35mm deep then 44 mm x 18 deep.
The real fun bit will be turning it around to do the other side and keep it all lined up.

I'll work that out when I get there....

OK - That is entirely to scary.
It will probably work - but just no .....

Sensible idea.
Put Boring head in Lathe Chuck and hold the work on the milling slide.
A much better idea I think...

You need to balance that setup - seems well out of balance. Bolt counterweights opposite the big chunky thing.

Alex,

I was in touch with Hugh, the owner of Amadeal, over an unconnected matter today and mentioned you might be in touch on Christmas Eve. He replied that he and his family are off to Malta in a few hours, so he will be closed for business tomorrow. He didn't say when he'd be back in action, but it obviously won't be until the New Year.

What type of motor are these?
If a foot mounted take a quicky to Machine Mart they will be about third of the price.

Just had a good browse...

Motor is End mounted. 2 Pole 2 wire. Permanent Magnet.
The only markings say 220 V
It's:
155mm long (inc the shaft) X 94mm dia with a 10 mm shaft.
4 Fixing holes are tapped M5 73.5 mm accross.

There is no Capacitor. Just 2 wires connected to a brush each.

Any idea what type of motor this is ac ? dc ? Frame Size / type ?

I strongly suspect it will be a DC motor, particularly if the machine runs off your domestic 230V supply and the motor speed is variable. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think AC permanent magnet motors are possible.

Hitherto, small Chinese lathes and milling machines with variable speed generally have permanent magnet DC motors. I'm pretty sure yours will be that type. Versions with "brushless" DC motors have begun appearing, but that is a fairly recent development.

Trying to put it on the Milling slide was a total failure.
The work moved all over the place....

I'm back to the face plate and apart from not being quite on center, i have got the hole out to 20 or so mm.

The Motor is 220 V DC.
All of the Machine Tool suppliers look to be closed over Xmas (Chester, Amadeal and Warco)
I can't find another online supplier so I'm totally stuck until the new year :(

Oh well

Thanks to all who have replied and commented.

Tr your luck on Freecycle for an old treadmill? I've used quite a few of these now for projects. Most are rated at 180v dc and there are plenty of controllers about to suite which would probably be cheaper than replacing what you have?

Parcan,

If the mill isnt under warranty, expect to pay dearly for a new motor...

However, there is hope....Not sure where you are located, but there is a company that can rewind the armature.....

http://www.robsonandfrancisrewinds.co.uk/armature-rewind/index.html

Maybe worth a call to them to ask how much a rewind would be rather than a new motor

and would save the agro of attempting to fit a non-standard motor...

Alex,

If you're considering having the motor repaired, I can highly recommend

     Fulmak Rewinding Co.
     236b Bennett Street
     Long Eaton
     Nottingham
     NG10 4HH
     Phone: 0115 973 3216

(www.fulmak.co.uk but looks like the site is being redeveloped)

Ian Makepeace is very helpful (and he also has access to a local Engineering firm by the name of Stevenson's .... whose work I can also commend  )

Dave
(no connection with Fulmak or Stevo's other than being a satisfied customer on several occasions)

Hi guys.

I have spoken to Both the Rewind Companies mentioned.
They were Quoting around £150 for a rewind.

Amadeal have however come up trumps...

They explained how to and got me to test the Board, which was also dead !

The mill was working hard, I was not unhappy to admit that, but it should have coped with what I was doing.
After a bit of Wheeling and Dealing we agreed a reasonable split.
A new Motor and Board will be on it's way to me in the next few days.

Thankyou has to go to Amadeal for Excellent Service and After Care of their products.

I met Hugh of Amadeal at a show (the first held in Manchester, last March. He's a nice chap.

Andy

PS That show is running again this year, in early March http://www.meridienneexhibitions.co.uk/our-events-detail.php?id=0000000015
"Event City" is next to the Trafford Centre, just off the M60 ring road.
Last year, the hall at the other end of the building held a tattooing exhibition, so you had to be careful about which door to enter. I recall a man in a kilt, so heavily tattooed that it was hard to tell where the tartan ended and his legs began.
