Lathe restoration
« on: December 10, 2012, 04:26:07 PM »
My latest challenge is to restore a Clarke CL300 mini lathe that I acquired from a club mate for a modest amount.......It needs some tlc and a few bits to make it work again...

To start with, the motor is shot and needs replacing.  I've since purchased a replacement and installed it along with a new drive belt...

The original speed controller, an FC250J type, is in need of repair work too...

I intend to subject this machine to some 'Modderitis'  :dremel:  to hopefully make the lathe better...

Mods are likely to include:

Taper roller bearings for the spindle which have been bought this evening....

A Quick Change Tool Post similar to the one I made for my Sieg Super C3....

Brass gibs for the crosslide

Lube holes for the lead screw bearing blocks...

Hopefully I'll post a few pics on the way to show my progress

At this point I must add my thanks to Andyf and Stilldrillin for their comments on what I should do with this machine...I've decided to keep it and restore it..so thanks guys for your input.

Hi John,

Well, if you really want to pimp your lathe, you might try reading these pages (also a Sieg C3 badged as a Clarke):

Looking forward to your occasional reports of progress!

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

John.

You want to fit brass gibs? I've got a crosslide set, still in the wrappings........

P.S.

The changewheels are on their way!
David.

Still drilling holes... Sometimes, in the right place!

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!
