Hi all from Indiana
« on: August 07, 2012, 07:21:28 PM »
Hi All,

Long time lurker, first time poster here.  I've been bumming around for about a month, but I finally registered today.

My name is Brian.  I have worked as an engineer for the last 20 years.  The early part of may career was spent working with embeded electronics and control systems.  This lead to machine design, and the last few years I have spent developing neuro-surgical instruments.

I became an engineer because I have always been an incessant tinkerer.  To be honest, I never liked math so I'm not one of those smart engineers, I just like to make stuff, and can usually make it work.  I have grown up around machine tools of one form or another, and for most of my career, I have been fortunate enough to have one old tool and die guy or another that was willing to show me how things worked.  I have a full blown wood shop at home and for metalworking I have a WWII era South Bend 10L I rebuilt a few years ago.  To round out the machine tools, I have free access to the tool room at work.

A few months ago my interest in model engines got rekindled, and I started building a PM Research #1 kit.  I have tried to do an extensive log of the build on another site, and I am almost done.  Recently a number of members over there flocked to this site so I thought I would check the place out.  I was a bit frightened when I first came to this site.  There are sooooo many of my hobbies present that I was afraid I would get lost!  I have collected and restored antique clocks for almost 20 years.  I worked my way through school as a photographer.  I have a '72 Triumph Spitfire that I am always making something for, and I am a fan of projectile sports.

I'll probably still get my daily model engine fix from my other home, but there is so much here that I'll have lots of fun, adn hope I can contribute in a meaningful way.

Here is a quick snapshot of the PMR#1.  This is a couple of weeks ago.  I have a few 3-48 nuts to make, and I'll call it done.  I'll post a video and a few pics then.

-Brian

Hiya Brian

Welcome to the collective :borg:

The engine is looking really nice. The base is nice looking too.

We do have a broad range of interests here... sometimes I get lost  :zap: But, they are all very cool stuff. Do show us more!

OK, here is the link to the build log over at HMEM.

http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/f31/pm-research-no-1-build-17259/

This is the first time I have ever logged something like this in public.  It is more time consuming that I expected, but it has been a very positive and motivating experience.  I highly recommend it.

I hope to finish the project off this weekend.  I only have a few little pieces of hardware to make, but one of my co-workers talked me into running in a Warrior Dash this weekend.  (It's a 3 mile run through a muddy obstacle course)  When I get it done I'll post some nice finished pics and a video on both sites.

Thanks again for the warm welcome!
-Brian
