Small 3 ph motor
« on: July 31, 2012, 03:17:38 PM »
I hauled off a Westinghouse HE washer for a friend, intending to reuse the motor. Got it out to discover it's 3 phase. What can I do with it? Don't have 3 phase in my shop.
Would it be of use for someone building a vfd/converter?
If I can't find a use for it, I'll tear it apart as it has cast aluminum end bells.

Chuck,
I would assume we are talking a motor in the <=1/2HP range?  If so, and you desire, you can get a vfd that inputs 110 and outputs 220 3ph or if you dig enough, there is probably on converter in the machine now?  What does it take for a power supply???? If it is single phase, then there has to be one in there or you can get one as stated above.

It is a 110vac appliance. I saved the circuit board that was connected to the motor.
I have no need for anything 3 phase in my little home shop. Just trying to find out if it is something someone else could use before I destroy it for some aluminum to melt and a 5/8" shaft.

Depending on HP, it might make a very nice variable speed motor for a lathe, drill press, etc???

I have several tradmill DC motors and controllers set aside for the lathe and the mill. As a mater of fact, I have a 1.5 hp treadmill motor and controller running my X2 mill. I was just asking if anyone could use the 3 ph motor for something. If not, I will strip it for the al and whatever I can get from it.

Chuck, if that appliance was running on 110, then there was probably some sort of VFD connected to it. That is probably the board you have with it. As someone mentioned, it would probably work well for a grinder or drill press project.

Pictures of the motor and controller here:

As I posted on HMEM, if anyone wants it, and will pay shipping, contact me via pm or e-mail. Otherwise I'll trash the controller and strip the motor Sunday.
