drill chuck internal taper with matching arbour
« on: April 14, 2012, 03:59:04 AM »
Advice sought here chaps... :dremel:

I have a standard 10mm dril chuck mounted on an MT3 arbour..but the problem is the taper on the chuck and the mating taper on the arbour keeps coming apart..

I've tried pressing the two together but after use the chuck sometimes fall off  the arbour...
I guess the two tapers may not be perfect giving rise to this, what should I do to resolve this?

Hi John,

The first thing - which I'm sure you have,  is to check for any "marring"  on either of the tapers.  Some engineers blue could be used to see how well the two tapers fit.

Hey John,
Might want to have a look at this one: http://www.machinistblog.com/?s=drill+chuck+installing&submit=Search

Hope that solves it.

There's no such thing as a 'Standard' taper on a drill chuck - there are several standard tapers.

John.
Mount your drill chuck's MT3 taper in place of your lathe chuck.

You can then adjust the taper fit into the drill chuck body, using a diamond file, or whetstone.

I've done it several times, to gain as much mini mill vertical clearance as possible......

It works!

John -- To ask the obvious one, what is the Jacobs Taper in your 10mm drill chuck?  Is it the same one as is on your arbour?  (Yes, I had to ask.)

Many of the "inexpensive" chucks are that way because they do not bother to make the mating tapers to the specification.  If you have tried the suggestions in Mikey's post, then it is time for DaveH's suggestion (though I grew up calling it prussian blue).  If it still does not hold in place, then the coefficient of friction between the two metals is much lower than standard (something I have seen twice in my life).  In that case, the trick is to smear a drop of vinegar on each face, allow to air dry for 24 hours, assemble as with a twisting motion, clamp (it used to be called "cramp" back in the 50's on your side of the pond), and allow to sit for at least a week.  The acid etch will allow the metal surfaces to oxide bond (OK, rust) together.

Ok guys,
I've not had much time to pursue this 'roundtoit' job as I've been busy repairing the cross slide lead screw on my lathe...

Some good advice there and some clever tricks...Never heard of acid on metal before ( unless you're into drugs.. )

Lew, yes the chuck and arbor were bought as a pair from a well known trader here in the UK ( are your ears burning Ketan? :D ) so I'm at the mercy of the supplier to have paired them correctly, I'm pretty sure of that..

So I think first I'll go with David D's suggestion and try the arbour mod..

Sadly I dont have any mike blue so I guess thats going on the shopping list for Harrogate..

John,

I don't think anyone's asked the question yet - Are you using the chuck on a lathe to hold drills or on a miller holding an end mill or (slot drill)?

Cheers.

Phil,

It is a standard Jacobs style chuck which I purely use for holding twist drills when drilling holes...

I use a Clarkson style for holding slot drills or end mills..

A tool for each job I believe in..

if you do not have any bluing just clean the chuck taper and the arbor tabor real good and then coat the arbor taper with a felt tip marker, let dry and then but them togther and do a slight turn and then take apart. you should see how they mate on the marker finish. good luck jonesie

John.
I buy from the same supplier, and others of lesser quality.

I have trued up a badly ground, wobbly, taper, using that freehand method.

All my chucks have minimal stand off.......

But, they don't come off, unless I persuade them.

Good luck!
