Hi everyone,

My name is Ross and I'm 16.

 Over the past few years I've become more and more interested and involved in engineering.Im mostly interested in engines, specifically steam and I have my own small collection of steam models or toys, whatever you want to call them, here is my not very recently updated website:

 I was recommended here by Stilldrillin on the unofficial mamod forum, he could obviously see I needed help!

 I've Bought myself a mini lathe so I can do my own model engineering projects etc.. And I'm in the process of waiting for parts to come!

They'll be lots of dumb questions from me to follow!

Aslo, what would you guys recommend as a good first project? I work on lathes at work and college so I'm not tot tally new, just new at this scale!

Hi there Ross Welcome to the cube 


As to a 1st project, the 1st steam engine project that I made was one of Elmers "wobbler" engines, plans are here

and my build log is here

I think that most of Elmers engines can be made on a mini-lathe, and they are a good starter project.

Hi Ross, nice to see you here. This is the same site I also recommended to you and also recommended to me by Stilldrillin, he is a good man, look after him 

Nice to see you got your lathe unpacked and setup 

As for a first project, I would say do something easy, in fact very easy and work upwards, please don't follow what I did and start with a set of castings for an engine  I am sure David and others will recommend some good first projects, the like of which I have only just got around to doing myself.

The lathe isn't quite set how I want it yet just a few more adjustments and lubrication needed. 

By looking at those projects, it looks like a drill press would be important? Would It be beneficial getting one?

May i also say welcome to the collective as you will have gathered by now there are quite a few of us from the other forum .Have a good look round as there is a great amount of information and loads of good advice here on this forum . The new lathe looks just the job enjoy yourself and have a go at a project perhaps a simple wobbler engine just to get familiar with a smaller lathe i myself had a bit of a learning curve using a smaller lathe after being used to heavier industrial machinery.

Hello and welcome.

A good first project for you would be ................. er ....... mmmmmmm   ...... I haven't a clue

So Ross, you choose what you fancy making,  have a good look round - you don't have to rush it. Then you choose the one you really fancy making. Look at some posts on here, look at the drawings, make your choice and go for it. There will always be  someone on here or elsewhere to provide some help, guidance, or advice if you need it.

I would say yes! Even a small cheap press. Would be better if you got a mill though. There are small bench models you can get that match your lathe.

However, there are guys who only have lathes that produce amazing things!

Drill press... As Eric said a Mill would be better. Although vastly more expensive it will do all the drill press can and so much more (with the right tooling)

I purchased both my mill's second hand at ~£400  a huge saving on the 1000's they would have cost new. Maybe a little bit of looking round on some engineering sales sites might throw one up in your price/size range?

Im tempted by the bench drills for now, I'm too tight with my money for a milling machine! I think I'll make a few very basic things like pulleys etc, to get used to the scale. Then I'll go from there I think, but I'll get 1 of the 2.

As for location, I'm in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

My first piece of home workshop machinery, was a cheap 5 speed bench drill, and vice.

Assembled properly, straight/ square/ accurately, it did all I needed it to do for several years. Until I bought my first little mill.
