Vertical twin steam engine with alternator
« on: July 14, 2011, 07:40:50 AM »
Hello

I'm 19-year-old student from Poland. I want to show you my last steam engine.

Here is a video on youtube

This is double action twin cylinder steam engine. It has got Stephenson linkage. Piston stroke 60 mm, piston bore 39 mm, steam pressure 5 atm.

I made the engine by myself. This is my own project. I didn't use lathe or milling machine. I have got only bench drill, welding machine and propane burner. Some parts I turned using bench drill. Pistons are made of aluminium. I used copper water tube to make cylinders. The valve is made of brass and I put teflon rings. I soldered tubes witch galvanized sheets.

Here are some pfotos:

Now I'm working at a new water tube boiler. I'm planning to bulid steam bicycle. I will use this engine and the new boiler.

Welcome to the Collective.  :borg:

That is a wonderful steam plant!  :bugeye:

I admire your perseverance, using none of the machinery we would expect to use!

Excellent work!

If you can make an engine like that I think you could make your own lathe!

Michal, that is a remarkable engine. You are a remarkable person to be able to make such an engine with the tooling you have.  Congradulations.

Michal,

First I'd like to welcome you to Madmodder.

You have given a whole new meaning to the term "modding" by building that engine. Nice use of parts and available tooling. You are truely a talented person.

Thank you for all your kind words.

To build the steam boiler I used two u-shape tanks. I took it from old cooking furnaces. When you are cooking it also heats water in central heating.
It was something like this:

I linked two tanks and added pressure gauge, safety valve and water gauge. I also built hand water pump. In the chimney there is superheater. The building next to the boiler is smokehause. They have got mutual chimney.

There are some photos:

You really make me feel ashamed...

I have my own CNC mill, access to a decent lathe, 2 other manual mills, plus tooling and "additional machinery" like saw, metal cutter etc etc.

And still, you do beat me by far comparing my achievements to your ingenuity and skill!

Keep it up and as someone said. I'm 110% sure you can build you're own lathe.
Can't imagine the things coming out of you're shop having a simple lathe...or what you could achieve in a workshop like the one I have access to but "don't have the time to use"...

What are you studying?

Keep us updated of you're progress.
Great work!

Welcome to MadModder, we are glad you stopped by to show us your latest steam engine.

With your attitude and determination I am sure that you could built your own lathe or milling machine if you decided to do so. There are some that have all the equipment and still would not attempt what you have accomplished without the lathe and mill. What you have built is truly an amazing accomplishment considering the tools available to you. I look forward to seeing more of your projects in the future as you have the time to show them to us. If you have any questions just ask as there is always someone around to answer or at least give an opinion. Good luck with your studies.  :D :D

Cheers

Amazing ingenuity, and excellent work.
A lot of the stuff I did when I was getting started working on cars and a lot of my fabrication stuff.. I had to do a lot of things the way you did.. But noooooowhere with the level of detail and skill that you did. You took cutting shaped with a drill and file and went to a whole different level.
Amazing work, very worthy of being immensely proud of.

Michal,

Welcome and ... I am embarrassed at my lack of ingenuity :(

I thought I could work out ways to get over difficulties but you really take ingenuity to new levels!!!

As others have said, you could make your own machine tools. See if you can get hold of or if your local library has any of Dave Gingery's books. They were written for someone just like you
