That's interesting Stew ....

Are those cotter type things to fix the beam to it's shaft ?? Can't see too well.

Once saw a flywheel done like that. Always expect the things to let go.

Big thing though ... roughly how long is the beam on that ?

Hi Dave

Yes, the whole thing is held together with steel wedges including the fly wheel which is made in segments with tenons pegged with wedges which did let go some time in the 1860, they used this engine to bring the ore to the surface and has they only got paid for ore on the surface the miners were in **** creak, so they fixed the fly wheel any way they could, so its got odd bits iron pegged into it, and one hell of a wobble but it still holding together all those years later.

The beams about 10ft long. I've got a drawing of the engine somewhere in the house, bin looking for it but its disappeared into the unknown.

Stew

Once worked with an old Geezer who erected engines. Albert. Always on about cotters and wedges ..

IIRC he worked for Gimsons of Leicester.

Once saw a lot of photos he brought in to work taken during various ginormous engine builds. Swarms of blokes with baggy trousers, shirts no collars, and flat caps. Except the upper echelons in Bowlers or top-hats ..

No idea what became of Albert or the pics. Would have been interesting archive material ..
