Hi there,

craynerd recommended I drop by here after reading about his Stuart 10v build. So far I have just been reading all the project log threads, and being very impressed! I've got a Unimat 3 without a motor and am undecided if to get a new one or just to sell up and get something bigger - I have been looking at the stuff on Chester/Warco etc., but I am temporarily without a place to put such large machines so it will have to wait until later this year.

In the mean time I was hoping you guys could recommend some reading material for a beginner to machining - other than the build threads here of course!

I'm a web developer, normally found playing with pinball machines, general electronics, and perhaps a bit of airgun shooting and reefkeeping. I have a couple of Lister stationary engines too. :)

If it were me, I would have a hard time waiting until I could get a place for bigger equipment. I would have to fix the Unimat so I had something to use until then.

Hi Chris, thanks for your emails and I`m glad you decided to join the board. Lots of good advice can be shared here.

Like I said, I`d have a bash at building one with the Unimat 3 and upgrade when you can later in the year. Have a look at Deans webpages: http://www.deansphotographica.com/machining/projects/projects.html

and also the Carter tools pages: http://www.cartertools.com/

They both use Taig mini lathes but the Unimat is very similar - I have had both. It will be good to see what incredible work can be done on a small lathe!

Welcome.

Never let small machine or space let you down. I started with 60kg lathe on the bedroom...sometimes my wife took a nap on the afternoon after the morning sift and I was turning some aluminium and plastic only two meters away. We put about 160-180 cm tall and 100 cm wide bookself between us... to keep the chops away. Flood coolant was not used.

Start something small and familiar and it just grows.

Thanks for the welcome all. I started cleaning up the Unimat after i spoke to Chris last weekend but haven't yet worked out a way of rigging up a motor - I've got a motor which looks suitable but it's far from original. Won't be able to touch it again until next weekend but will try and update the thread with some photos. I'd appreciate any leads on a good replacement motor!
