Just to answer Blade's question. Whenever I buy a chuck, the first thing I always ask is if soft jaws are available for it. If they aren't, then I don't buy that particular chuck, purely for the reason you have asked that question. If you can trace your particular chuck to a supplier, then you stand a good chance of obtaining a set. If you can't, then it could be rather difficult, mainly due to the fact that each manufacturer will have their own ways and settings for cutting the scrolls in their own produced chucks, so just by asking for a set of soft jaws for say a 5" 3 jaw chuck might get a set sent to you, but unless you are very lucky, they won't actually fit because the scroll inside the chuck isn't the same as the scrolls on the back of the jaws. I have been trying to educate people over the last few years to buy soft jaws for their chucks when they actually buy the chuck. They are relatively cheap at around 25 pounds per set for a normal sort of chuck, and that outlay will be more than repaid when you come to do very accurate turning, plus, at a push, when they are eventually turned down so you can't turn them down any more, you can always bolt or weld new soft iron faces to them, so they should last at least the lifetime of the chuck. So even though this hasn't answered Blade's question exactly, maybe he will understand where I am coming from. John |
