  Nowt much mate - seems to be a funny sort o' tradition in ol' Blighty with wooden coaches with shiny brass bits going down the streets and coppers hanging 'round everywhere...  Just a regular sort o' day from what I can gather  :D :D

Kenneth

It a wobbler ( sprung loaded center ) held by the TS  and the dial gauge is used to check the run out )

Basically its a centre finding device to set thing running true

But  I bet Rob can explain it better

Just curious, what determines whether you choose to use your horizontal setup or a standard vertical? - I know there is always more than one way "to skin a cat", but just curious how you personally decide.

Hi Chris ,,,,,,,,,,,, i mainly just use the HZ for profile cutters , gear cutting and deep slots   :dremel: :)

Cheers

A bit more progress  :dremel:

The main bearing caps ,, a bit of ally bar was milled up to the required width and thickness ,but longer than needed and a centre point marked on each end for the radius .

Then the ends were milled to form the flat section.

The bar was mounted on the R/T and clocked into the pre marked points ,,, same as  method as with the 4 jaw ,just vertical ,centre fitted to mill spindle and R/T clocked into spindle .
the rad was milled on each end .

The bar was held vertical in a tool makers vice , then held in the mill vice .

Fined the centre

then the edge

Working from there move in the correct distance for the first hole , and using a slot drill , mill a flat .

centre drill

and drill

move to the other hole using the dials to get the position and repeat  .

do same to other end of the bar ,, then cut the caps off the stock leaving some to machine up .

Then mill to size.

Now the main bearing supports need milling up ,, i tilted the bed of the mill to do this , but you could just mount it in the vice at the correct angle .

Then the holes were drilled and taped for the cap screws wile still in this position ,,, after finding the centre line and working from this point .

Thats all for now lads

Rob

You are definitely making it look too easy Rob.

Next thing you know there will be dozens of these being made. So when you cut the gears, make up some long bar lengths, and cut up extra sets for selling on to keep everyone happy.

Very nice setups and explanations BTW.

Brilliant work, it does look rather easy to make this engine though Rob, it's a doddle - you should have picked something more challenging  :poke:

Cheers LADS

Moving along ,, next up the main bearing brackets need boring ,, a small angle plate was clocked on the mill

And the base fixed to it

Then drilled and bored

next up using the mill dials ,, the position of the hole for the timing gear shaft was located , drilled and reamed 1/4" ,, i am deviating from the drawings a bit here .

Cheers Benni  :D

Next the crank ,,,,,,,,,

Several hours later my saw had cut through the lump of steel  ::)

the centres were marked out on each end and drilled

next a slot was milled to remove most of the material to form the big end

This was then turned between centres , starting with a stiff slotting tool to remove most of the material .

Then a thinner tool was used to turn the journal

With that done ,, i need a spacer to go between the crank webs ,, so the crank will not bend when the pressure from the tail stock is applied ,,, there are many ways of doing this ,,,this is my way , turn up a length of steel   to be a good fit between the webs , a slack fit is no good ,,,

If its too tight when a parallel is laid across ,,it will rock ,, so a bit more will need to be machined off .

Drill and tap one end and part off leaving a top hat ,position in line will main journals centres , hold in place with screw and washer

Ahhh my favourite post is back!! :bugeye:
what are u doing with the gear shaft rob?
are u using custom gear sizes?
I really like your way of making the web spacer, and u will see that, when it comes time for my rattler crank
