Two cylinder steam engine with maudslay control
« on: June 27, 2010, 06:04:38 AM »
Hi Everyone,

In the introducion-section I was asked to show something of my work, that I do, so, here we go:

At the moment I am building a small two cylinder steam engine with maudslay control, after plans from this german book:

http://www.amazon.de/Dampf-Bd-35-Zwei-Dreizylinder-Dampfmaschine-Maudslay-Steuerung/dp/3788306564/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1277581149&sr=8-1

The plans call mainly for brass as material, but i am going for steel and cast iron, using brass and bronce only where necessary..also, I don't use ball bearings...i prefer plain bronce bearings.

Progress so far:

Base and bearing mounts, everything made from steel:

Cylinderblock (cast iron) and zylinder liners (spherical cast iron)

Cylinderblock with the steam chests (also made from cast iron) fittet, the sliding valce is made of bronce.

The steam inletts and the nearly finished crankshaft:

Finished excentric Straps, with bronce bearings fitted:

The excentric Straps fitted to the machine:

Yesterday I started with the conrods, again cast iron:

greetings
Stefan

Well Stefan, it looks like you are well on your way to a fine engine, I think you made the right choice for material, the steel and iron always looks good, and sometimes too much brass looks more gaudy than functional.  Very nice crisp and clean lines, nice finish on all the parts shown, you should have a fine engine when it's done.  Good job starting out. mad jack

Very nice detailed work. Like the conturing of the con rods.

Beautiful work, Stefan.  Like Jack, I appreciate the work you've done keeping your edges crisp.
Very nicely done, all of it!  Hope you'll show us more.

Thank you for the kind words, that motivates really

As soon, as there are new parts finished, I will show them..maybe also a few pictures of the machine, showing how parts were chucked up or machined.

Today I turned the lower conrod bearings:

What? Four of them?
...
I think, they should be milled down a bit:

The result, splitted bearings:

Mounted in the conrods:

Good enough for me..  ::)

Well shown too!

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!

Here we go...the reversal control:

Milling the bearing blocks from hot rolled mild steel:

Milling the contour and roughing the holes:

Aligning both bearing blocks on the conventional milling machine to bore them out:

Boring job...  ::)

Drilling and boring a piece of flat, cold rolled steel for the levers:

They will be cut in single pieces after that

Back on the cnc machine, the jig to hold the levers:

Alignment happens by the big bushing and the small 3mm pin, the part is held by the M5 screw

Finished lever:

The bearing blocks with the levers and bushings:

Hi Stefang

I must have missed this thread     Great job your doing there ,, THE CON-RODS  :jaw:   ,,Just one criticism  :poke: ,, you could have posted MORE photos of how you held them for machining  :D ,, I like the way you showed the gig for the levers  ,, i have a small cnc mill ,,,,, still have to put it to good use  ::)

Regards Rob
