Screwdrivers
« on: April 10, 2010, 03:21:02 PM »
You know those cheap screwdrivers sets that come in a blister pack with the drivers in a fan shape ?
Often seen on market stalls ?

Well just got back from Tesco and they have a 22 piece set for £3.00 yup no typo, three quid.

Contains flat, Phillips, Torq, a scratch awl and one of those forked things for getting skinheads out of police horses hooves.

I bought a set just to loose and so save my better quality £4 set.

What do you use your £4 set for, to save your better quality yet £5 set?

Looks like a good deal to me.  :D

Nice of you to notice Darren but I don't have a £ key. We have a $ Key instead. What I do is to simply "cut and paste" when I want something like that I don't have. Some times I will even keep a little junk document around with some common signs and symbols that I might need just to copy from.  :D :D

Cheers

For future reference......holding the Alt key and pressing 0,1,6,3 you will get the £. Also by holding Alt and pressing 0,1,2,8, you get €

Is there a sequence that will put a slash in a zero? Really could use one.

Joe

Edit: Found it, Alt + 0,2,1,6 See Ø Ø

You guys dont know about charmap.exe? Standard windows program. Use the run command(windows key + R, or Start -> run) and type "charmap" and Enter.

This will give you all the special characters. You find the one you want. Click on it, then click on select, and then click on Copy. And theeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnn, paste it where you want!  :headbang:

At the bottom right of the Character map screen it gives you the ALT code for the character so you can make a list up and pin it to the computer to save doing all this again.

£   ALT 0163
°    ALT 0176
©   ALT 0169
®   ALT 0174
±    ALT 0177
²    ALT 0178
³    ALT 0179
¼   ALT 0188
½   ALT 0189
¾   ALT 0190
Ø   ALT 0216
€   ALT 0128
·    ALT 0183
•   ALT 0149
™  ALT 0153

What am I doing wrong? My ALT key just seems to toggle a "File Edit View Favorites Tools Help" toolbar on and off. If I carry on typing 0163 while holding the ALT key down, nothing further appears.

Off to Tesco now, to look for screwdrivers....

Andy

Edit: Back from Tesco, after fruitless search for screwdrivers. So far, Sunday has been a failure.

Hold down ALT and at the same time press the number keys
NOTE: The number keys on the numeric keypad NOT the ones on the top row of your keyboard.

Hope this helps.

 Thanks, Gordy! Another of life's little mysteries solved  :med:

I rarely use the numeric keypad, because I'm on a laptop where some of the RH letter keys double up as the numerics, and you have to use the "fn" key as well as ALT to access the numbers. I'm a hunt and peck typist, and can barely read the tiny blue numbers on those keys, so tend to stick to the nice big numbers across the top.

Just to add to the list a quick way to get the Euro sign is to use the right hand Alt key (ie the one to the right of the space bar) and 4 (the one above the letters with the $)

Sacré bleu! Experiment shows the RH alt key also does acute accents on vowels, though I think a Frenchman might be surprised at í . Can't find a similarly neat trick for other accents, though.

Hello all,

Thought I might add a few more alt+codes you might find useful:

¢    0162
¤    0164
¥    0165
×    0215
⁴    8308
₂     8322
⅔    8532
⅓    8531
⅕    8533
⅖    8534
⅗    8535
⅘   8536
⅙    8537
⅚    8538
⅛    8539
⅜    8540
⅝     8541
⅞     8542
⅟    8543
∆    8710
∞    8734
∟    8735
∠    8736
∡    8737
∢    8738
⊾    8894
⊿    8895
∴    8756
∶    8758
∝    8733
≠    8800
≡    8801
≢    8802
≣    8803

Sorry to make a long list but I had a table that the alignment got messed up with posting!

Be aware all of these may not work dependent on the specific font you are using as some seem to be font dependent; they all show with MS Gothic.

Best,
Mike
