Quite a common process in many countries until quite recently and widespread in Europe during WWII.  I believe the converter is not difficult to make.

You need wood chippings and a lot of it ....
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Ah, "producer gas" - haven't heard that mentioned since my schooldays. Mainly highly poisonous carbon monoxide. Google producer gas to read all about it.
