determine the size of a register for an M14*1 thread?
« on: November 22, 2009, 04:49:04 PM »
I have a couple of 80m chucks that I need to use on my lathe and indexing unit....

My indexer has a threaded spindle lathe to take my lathe's chuck( 100mm  with an M39*4 thread..)

Now I'm going to make a new spindle for the indexer and I also have a 3mt arbour with a soft end (to thread to M14 for use in my lathe)

What register diameter shoud I be machining to ? Is there a standard or do I just do my own thing?

I can't really understand what you are trying to do John, the second and third lines have confused me (easily done), any chance of a sketch or word it slightly different so that even I can pick up on it.

Maybe it is about the chuck register, in which case, you need to measure the recess in the back of each chuck, as they can be different between manufacturers.

Bogs,

thanks for the reply..

Mebbe I'm misusing terms...here...

There's a recess on the back of the chuck, yes? which is of a fixed dia......Ok...

Think I need to take photo of what I am rambling on about....

Let me get back to you all....

Dont hold your breath....I'm away for a few days...

I think what John's trying to say,John, what the diameter of the piece should be before threading M14.
About 13.8MM?

Sorted....

My 9*20 has a spindle register of 39mm...with an M39*4 thread....

Ergo I think the M14 spindle would have a reg of 14mm but it doesnt matter it can be bigger.........As I found out this weekend...

Thanks for the replies gents...
