Got a new tool today
« on: November 17, 2009, 12:39:31 PM »

Received my new Starrett edge finder today just got to learn how to use it now.
From the videos on U-tube  it seems pretty easy to use.
I liked the price £6.86
They are being sold here in the UK for about £27.00

You'll like it. I have several of them and they all get used regularly. I find the .200" end to be the most useful. Just don't forget to offset half the diameter...

The first machining I did, with my little Sherline lathe and mill, I used a DTI and carefully indicated in the part for each cut. I got really good results, but it took forever to make anything. I started getting lazy and watching with a magnifier when the cutting bit would just touch the part. Then I got a Starret edge finder, now I wonder how I ever did without it! I still indicate some parts in with a DTI if want maximum accuracy, but 99% of the time the edge finder is quick and easy, with more than enough accuracy.

Enjoy your new tool!

I am probably missing something, but it appears to be one of the easiest tools you could make. Don't you just touch the edge then move in 1/2 the diameter on the DRO?

Yes, but the end of the tool is the indicator. It is not just a solid shaft.

I think the reason he is spinning the light type finder is it only takes a small whisker of swarf to give a false reading.
Spinning  it would flick out any bits of  swarf or hairs of metal that maybe missed by the eye.
