Logan Shaper
« on: November 07, 2009, 11:18:10 AM »
Need help in deciding if I should buy or not to buy.

I have a chance to buy a small Logan Shaper for what I believe to be a steal $200.00 US. It looks to be all there and in real good shape with very little rust (has been in storage for the last 4 years).

Now what I need to know is what it anything can I do with a shaper that I can not do with a milling machine?
I know that I can cut internal gears and spines with one.

I hate to past it up but I do not want to buy it and have it just set in my shop and collect dust, I would rather see some one get it that would use it.

What do you all think?

BUY IT!!!!

the best thing about a shaper is you can sharpen all your own cutters and you can hand grind form tools for special jobs.
i had one and i sold it cause i don't have room for it in my current shop and boy do i miss it  :(

Yes, buy it! My little one is my treasure!  It clicks and whirrs and sometime later it finishes the job and like Chuck said you can make the grind the tools you need!

Two questions:

1) Where is it?
2) Will it fit into the back of my car?

:D

I have a Alba 10" shaper and I wouldn't be without it. I used it recently to make some T nuts for one of my other machines, yeh I could have used my miller, but I was'nt in any rush (hence the name Slowcoach) and it did a brilliant job. If you have the space get it

Ok Richard,

I see your in Northern NY. I'm near Rochester so if you don't want it I'm game. It would match my Logan lathe you know.

I love using mine, yes most of the work can be done in the mill, but it's not the same ... not nearly the same ....

Then there is the stuff the mill can't do ....
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Richard

It seems to be unanimous. You best grab your wallet, fire up the truck and go get it before someone else does. Sounds to me like everybody that doesn't have one wants one.  :) :)

PS: When you do go for it remember  :worthless:.

Cheers

Made up my mine to get the shaper, call today to tell them that I would be over to pick it up.
I’m a day late and a dollar short.  It was sold yesterday. Oh well I guest I didn’t really want it or need it.
I talked to an old machinist friend, he has a large one and said he may use his one or two times a year it that.

Thinks for the help in making up my mine. javascript:void(0);
