Mill:

Lathe:
Clamp a dial indicator to a tool rest or other fixed position so that it rides on the spindle or test bar.

....

And if you get any discrepancies,  :dremel: :hammer:

Rather than a dial gauge

http://rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/DTI__PLUNGER_CLOCKS_.html

You might find, although a little more expensive, a finger DTI will be a lot more versatile

http://rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/FINGER_CLOCKS.html

And a mag base will take care of most mounting problems

Or for mag bases on their own

I intially bought a dial guage as they were cheaper. I quickly went out and bought a DTI and the dial guage hasn`t been used since ... spend the money and go with a DTI as John said.

OK excuse the question but what is the difference between a dial gauge and a DTI ?
Been in this game for 137 years and always knew them as the same animal, different name.

John,

I was taught when doing my apprenticeship (way back in the last century) that a gauge with a plunger either from the side or back was called a dial gauge, whereas one with a finger was called a dial test indicator (DTI).

It is something I have always stuck with to differentiate the two. Maybe someone has another explanation we don't know about.

DRO's, for those that have them, have just about made Dial Indicators obsolete but they have a long way to go to supplant DTI's.

And, while I am in this thread, I have a question. Why are the DI's or DTI's called clocks? i.e. Plunger Clock or Finger Clock. Clocks, at least to me, refer to the measurement of TIME in some form but not the measurement of DISTANCE!!

They have a face and dial hand that looks like a clock. (no, not like a digital clock)(does anybody still use old style clocks with hands?)
