My new 10 X 22
« on: October 02, 2009, 10:21:16 PM »
Here is my new Gizzly 10 X 22 lathe.

And here is what happens when you are not careful around the "nasty brown stuff" aka wood or more specific plywood.

When I was building the new bench for the lathe I got careless with a piece of plywood and ran a rather large splinter deeply into my finger. The splinter had to be surgically removed. So it is not just swarf you have to be careful of too.

One thing I wasn't happy about, besides the finger, was, when I oiled the spindle bearings thru the oilers a lot of black gritty oil came out. I kept pumping oil in until it ran clear clean oil. Followed the run in procedures in the well written Grizzly manual. They also sent a sheet showing where they checked the accuracy of the lathe at Grizzly.

I will do my own checks but was happy Grizzly did it too.

Can't wait to turn some thing but other family matters need to be taken care of first.   :bang: :bang: :bang:

Ron,
That is a sweet looking machine. Nice gadgets with it too. Sorry about the splinter, plywood is bad about that. Anytime you let your hand slide along the edge of it that can happen.

That is a great looking machine that you have there. You will spend many happy hours watching little unknown pieces emerge from inside big chunks of metal after you shave all those curly things off. Wood can bite just as well as metal. I've had my share of them.

Hope it heals quickly as the bandage always seems to get in the way of progress.

Cheers

Perfect pictures of happiness (except for the war wound).

You will not believe just how much enjoyment that lump of iron is going to give you over the years to come.

Just take your time giving it a bit of good setting up, and it will reward you with good service.

Very nice indeed.

Tinker, Don, Stew and Bogs, Thanks all. Yes the finger is healing well.
I plan on using the "Rollies Dads Method"of checking the lathe.  Any other methods and thoughts are welcome and eagerly sought. I want to get it as accurate as I possibly can. I don't have a machinist level but may be able to borrow one from a friend who owns a machine shop where they make hydraulic cylinders.

Sorry about the wound, but congrats on the lathe  !
It looks rather like this one http://www.weiss.com.cn/products/wm250v.php . If it does originate from Weiss, I'm sure you will be more han happy with it, just as I have been with their smaller 180V.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Thanks Andy. Finger is mending. Still a little tender.

I'm sure I will enjoy it.
