The Artful Bodger tries a ball turner...

John Hill:
Thanks Ralph, that makes good reading!

My biggest problem right now is mounting the work so that it is adequately supported.  I think my knobs will have a 10mm thread so I intend putting a bit to 10mm thread in the end of something thicker, 22mm I have on hand, sort of an extension so I can get away from the chuck jaws.

One of my design oversights has been to make the base thick enough to foul the chuck and to top piece is probably bigger than it needs to be too.

My first experiments has been with a tool steel cutter but today I will be going to pick up a couple of round index tips which should make things easier.

Thats better.... :ddb:

Obviously a rigid mount is essential and this is better than I had been using.

Wouldn't pointed be better than round?  They'd be able to get you closer to the stalk with minimal web.

I am going to try round, I find that a lot of the cutting in the initial stages is not exactly on the point of the tool and I am hoping that the round will give me a nice radiused merge into the stalk plus presumably give me a smoother finish overall.  Time will tell, tomorrow maybe as the tips have arrived.

The best video I have seen of a ball turner in use was a simple piece of round (1/4"?) tool steel mounted vertical, in fact his ball turner was not much more than a circular metal puck on a pivot with holes for the tool steel.

CC,

Nice ball turner, the big question is, which came first the ball or the ball turner?!  (on your handle)

Nick
