You've had a good buy there Colin.

When you get it, make sure the main base underneath is flat with no dings. If there are any, just gently flat them off with a stone.

You will need to calibrate it, so when you are ready, just ask and I will do a quickie write up for you. It is really easy.

I too, would be very interested to see how they are set up.

I got this pair, a 4" and a 8" Rabone Chesterman at a boot sale in 2007 for £1 each.  
Didn't think much of 'em cos I have no way of telling if they are 'calibrated' or not.
Other than checking 'em against a builders 4 ft. level, which probably won't tell me much .. even I worked that out

To calibrate engineers  spirit levels......

Stand level on almost level surface.

Note bubble position.

Turn level around. (180dgrs).

Note bubble position.

Adjust with locknuts (on r/h end, Dave`s pic), to give same reading either way round.......

Good job I took up Electrical Engineering. If I'd had to earn a crust with  Mechanical, I would have died of starvation decades ago ..

So what error would I expect if I did that. My Stabilo ( builders level ) 4' says 0.5mm / metre . Or 1 part in 2000 (?) Dunno if it actually is tho'. No way to verify.

Better that that I would hope .. but what.

Many thanks anyway Dave, ... now back to soldering in some resistors. Two holes, two wires. Anyway round is OK. I might just scrape through.

A good quality engineers level should be able to give you an accuracy of 0.002" over 3 feet, or 0.05mm over 1 metre,
or approx 1 in 20,000.

A builders level is just that, good enough for putting up a building, but no use for precision stuff.

Thanks for info. on accuracy.

Nice to have some idea of their limits.

Just had a quick go at the 4" one on a surface plate, propped up to get the bubble dead on the fiducial.
Crack on both ways  Even with a small hand lens, I can see no error.

Big one has some edge dings, will have to bevel the edges by about .5mm  .. this OK ??

Can't see any reason not to .. there is plenty of cast iron to sit on, about 3/8" to the central groove.

So, having fecklessly spent circa the price of 10 Bensons, I now possess a pair of some thing I can adjust, but appears to have no practical use ??, 'cos a professional engineer has had one for Donkeys Years in his toolbox, unloved, unwanted, so he gives it away ?

It doesn't matter who gets the info across, it saved me a job 'cos as you know, I would have made a meal of it, with piccies as well.

As long as everyone understands how to do it, then no probs.

IMHO, having used precision levels for all my working life, I just don't know what I would do without one. I use mine for all sorts of things, not just levelling up machines.
Actually my largest is broken at the moment, for some reason it decided to empty itself, now I have got just one big bubble, no liquid. I have priced them up to replace, and they are reasonably priced. But because they are only available from the manufacturer, and they have a min order of 50 squid, with vat and postage it will cost me about 65 squid to repair. I will just wait until I can get another of fleabay, and keep this one for spares.

I'll have to scrape the cement off mine, came in handy for brick laying.
Pain to set up though.
I have a precision jobby some where 2 thou runouts sends bubble off the scale.

Right back to it.
