ER32 collet chuck question
« on: August 18, 2009, 02:58:30 PM »
Hi everyone.

I have just fitted my new collet chuck delivered (within 2 days) from gloster tooling.

Testing it got 0.12mm runout at 250mm from the chuck with a 10mm silversteel bar.  And then realized that I dont know if that is good or bad?????

Can anybody help -It looks much better than my 3 jaw chuck wich is terrable but just dont know????

Thanks

Gerhard

Gerhard,

Try your runout very close to the chuck, as you shouldn't be cutting that far from the chuck with unsupported material anyway.

0.12mm is very good if measured that far from the chuck with the piece unsupported. Anything up to say 0.03mm close to the chuck is fairly good if you haven't done a truing grind in the nose.

As John said that run out that far out is good

I'd be chuffed with a run out like that so far from the chuck with such a thin bar esp unsupported !!!
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Hi thaks for replies

I tested at the chuck and got 0.06mm decided to try and improve

Skimmed the backplate on the lathe
tested with a 12mm silver steel bar -0.02 at the chuck amd just les than 0.10 at about 200mm

That should do for now will have to test other diameters etc. later

That is great, bet you can do some really accurate work in that. It does sound tempting as it won't mark the work piece either. I think I should get a collet chuck for lathe as I have ER 25 collets for my mill I could utilise. I could of course just put the mill collet chuck in the lathe, that would only be any use for small components though as wouldn't be able to get stock through it.
