 We are having another go at fixing this, when we got it we could move all the axises but when we went to extend the tailstock we got a low oil message followed by a improper shut down  and it hasn't started up since. It stalls at initiating host and the hydraliics haven't worked since even though the oil was topped up the only contact that gets pulled in is the one for start.
here is a couple pics and a video thats aprox 3 minutes long (much like watching paint dry)

I'd run along the back plane of that card cage looking for voltage rails with an Avo to see if the un-illumimated half is perhaps missing a supply

What’s a Avo? I did pull the cards could it be possibly I put it in the wrong slot?
Ok just looked it up Amp Volt Ohm.

Tom Google AVO. Millions of them made! Amps / Volts / Ohms meter.

Modern versions are electronic but I still prefer the original analogue AVO for most measurements. With analogue you can see changing values as well as measuring static levels.

I thought it was only my old boss who referred to AVO meters!

AVO was a British trademarked name, so people of a certain age still use the name, whereas most people now refer to them as either multimeters, or analogue meter/gauge.

(Back in 1963 the father of one of my school friends was a Director of AVO's and arranged for me to to have a tour round their original factory in Vauxhall Bridge Road (London). It was a fascinating collection of adjacent, originally houses, that had connections knocked through at all levels, with bits of production all over the place. They made the Douglas Coil Winder there as well. Very shortly after then they moved to Dover where I think they still are)

Ah. Nostalgia kicks in ....  Still got, and use, my AVO8 Mk4     although not on resistance. Don't think the 15V battery is ( readily ? ) available now.
Happy hours in the RAF skiving on the AVO valve tester .. waiting for the heaters to warm up  Quick shufti at the Good / Bad meter. Good 'uns to the box marked 'Tested  OK'. Otherwise back to the maker. Stick the next in  .. light a fag .... wait for heaters etc ..etc.. etc ...

15v batteries for avos easily available on good old Ebay!! I have an AVO8 mkV and a little GPO AVO 12D. they are the best!

You only need the 15v battery for the high resistance, 20MΩ I seem to recall. The rest just use 1.5V.

It’s been a while so just a very quick update I pulled the cards and found that one of three cards was missing a piece of electronics ( right side three down )

Have you replaced it and is all now working?

I just got back on this thing I’ll check ebay for another card. I’m hoping to get it at least far enough to see if I can bring up some parameters or functions it seems to cycle through some functions so the memory may be intact still.
One thing I have been wondering about is it is only grounded through the panels should I drive a stake in to ground it better?
