Oh dear. Milling machine incoming
«

Saw this milling machine on eBay.
Was at £113 so I thought I'd chuck a cheeky bid on it. Only to find I'd won it for £127
Apparently the knee doesn't raise or lower but at what it's cost I'm not worried.
Any one have any ode of make?
Collecting it next week so I'll post up more pics when I get it.

I had a look at completed eBay listings and guess this must be it.

Hi there, Dawesy,
Congratulations, it looks like a bargain, even if you need to do some work on it.
What distance do you have to travel to collect it?

Yeah I was kinda surprised that no one else bid ( but happy obviously
) did finish at an odd time though.
John do you know the make? The seller doesn't seem to know much about it?

look rather like a viceroy to me. but without the power feed to table. Im sure there cant be much wrong with it. Possible slight nut or leadscrew damage if its been screwed right off. suprised it wont reengage though. Im sure you will sort it.

Does it sit on a stand/cabinet that's not in the picture. If so perhaps the leadscrew for the "Z" is in the stand?

Think it's floor mount.
Picking it up Tuesday so I'll update. Yeah I'm thinking broken feed nut or screw either way not unrepairable.

This looks more like an AJAX horizontal mill with a slotting head attachment. The long sloped section of the column looks all to familiar? The head does not seam to have any quill or control either, could be wrong though.

Don't let that put you off though as you might find somebody would do you swap of the slot head for BP series 1 head?

10 points to Swarfing it is indeed an Ajax horizontal mill.
Seller said he had no idea what make it was a quick look found this plate
Unfortunately some kind soul has removed the pulley system from the rear. Sure I can remake it all and get it working as a horizontal mill again if I can find the sizes etc.
for now a strip down back to cast and some fresh paint is on the cards ( another eBay paint job
)
All the ways seem in good order and the knee screw has indeed just come off (5 min fix) so good news there.
I'll update as I go.

hi John,
I've tried identifying the model but with no joy. I've fired off an email to ajax to see if they can help.
seems quite sturdy although it was certainly easier to move than the Churchill lathe (that was the equivalent to a small moon)
going to carry on stripping it today.

It seems that 'Ajax' is a bit of a catch-all name for machine tools.
I have an Ajax drilling machine of very solid, cast iron construction, that has a plate with 'Ajax, Halifax' attached.
But at work we had a large Ajax centre lathe that was made in Bulgaria. Both these machines have the name Ajax cast into the body.

Had a reply and the serial number is not in a normal format
but leads them to think it may be an AJ9 from around 1969. Once it's all pointe and back together I'll send them some pics off for them to confirm.
He did say that they were most likely made in mainland Europe :/

Apparently it's a little larger.
It's identical to the one that Swarfing linked to. I've ask the seller for some pictures of the rear to see how the motor and belt arrangement was.
Just got to figure out what spindle type it is.
Currently it's completely disassembled in the workshop awaiting some wire wheels for the angle grinder to remove the numerous layers of paint.
