Saving Threads
« on: September 15, 2014, 02:39:48 PM »
Is there any way to save a thread from the forum to include any pictures that appear in it?

I appreciate that you can 'print' a thread, but this doesn't include pictures. Knowing that some interesting threads have in the past 'lost' their pictures (Bogs and Rob Wilson's come to mind) it would be nice to 'tuck a copy away' for the more interesting articles.

Well given the size of hardrives on the market you should be able to save the text and pics in its own folder to build up a reference library

You can try printing to a PDF. That works for me.

What browser do you use? Do you have a PDF reader installed?

I installed a PDF printer program ( like this one http://www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/writer.asp ) and then you can "print" a copy, but rather than printing it out on paper, it prints it to a pdf file.

Then all you need to do (on multi-page threads) is to select the "All" link at the top of the thread (where you can select certain pages 1,2,3,ect ect), then select Print from your browser menu, select the PDF printer instead of your physical printer, and then it will prompt you to enter a filename and where you want to save it.

Works for me.

Thanks all and severally.

I must be being a bit dim here. If I select print I get what is possibly a printable format page displayed but no options to choose a printer or indeed print at all.

I did download that pdf printer program that Tim pointed to as this particular laptop that I'm working on hasn't up till now had one (other PCs I use have), and after I had uninstalled all the other junk it shoves on the PC such as Comodo Dragon and all the ASK rubbish there was no change even setting the pdf printer as default.

Browser is Chrome, operating system Vista Business  I'll pop over to IE and see what happens !

**Later ** now on different computer, different operating system (win 7) different browser (ie 11) SAME symptoms

So how do you initiate a print to your pdf creator / printer ?

I assume you have Adobe Creator installed?
if you go to install a new printer, the Adobe facility is?
Else if you go to file and  whatever options, isnt Adobe there too?

I'm not at a pc right now, so Im sort of flying blind.....

All i do is "right click", select "print", change destination to "save as PDF", the preview appears with everything in
if i'd thought it through, i'd have never tried it

Left click and drag to select what you want to save, then right click and copy (to clipboard).

Then paste it into a Word document.

Keep going until you have the whole thread.

OK some basic misunderstanding here  :bang: :bang: :bang:

I've been using the 'PRINT' button that appears on the line :

'REPLY' 'NOTIFY' 'MARK UNREAD' 'SEND THIS TOPIC' 'PRINT'

... thinking that it was an inbuilt function of the board, and it is that button that just gives a re-formatted page

Yeah....that happened to me once. I tought that it would print the whole tread - yea but - no but - it frigging strips out all the pictures. Functionality from early 1700?

Trouble with that is the often the threads that you want to save consist of several 'forum pages' each of which consist of many 'windows pages' so you end up with a mishmash of umpteen files just for one thread.

In Chrome - Right Click on page -> choose Print from context menu -> select Printer (i.e. your virtual PDF printer) -> go.

Alternatively start by clicking on the '3 lines' button at end of address box, then select Print.
