From time to time we visit Foxfeild steam preservation society in Stafordshire (Stoke) I have an old work friend who owns a couple of Loco's that he keeps stabled there, were talking full sized jobs, so I though I'd show you a few pics of locos thay had in steam.

Sorry put the pics don't show the full loco but it was the valve gear I was interested in.

The next set of pics is of my freinds loco its a Dubs Crane Tank its the only one of its kind in the world still working, this is only the second time he has had it in steam after spending 9 years renovating it.

I did a bit of maching for him for it and my good wife painted the wheels

I'm particularly fasinated by how the crane jyb works its quite simple realy it has two small twin cylinder steam engines one slews the jyb via a worm and wheel, the other that powers the hoist is in the middle of the jyb and rotates with it and as an intersting steam coupling (think about it), next time I'm there I'll take some pics of the set up.

I recon it would a real interesting engine to model

That does sound like a good candidate to make a model of. You have enough access to get some good pictures and measurements?

Got to admit, to privately own a things like that, must be very nice.

Steamtown is very nice. Fairly close to me. We have a couple of smaller ones very close. New Hope Railroad is one. Want to go to Black River.

Back on target... Stew, got more pictures? Love seeing stuff like this.

Now you've done it; showing just some tantalizing tidbits of that 060 loco  - looks like standard gauge rails, but the loco does not have much visible in the line of tanks and coal storage, suggesting it should have a tender as well ? - Sort of fits right in with a design struggling to get out of my gray matter of late...

The crane should also be a fun one to model

Arnold the loco has coal storage in a bunker just behind the driver in the second photo, smaller engines were used for shunting and industrial work around doc yards, coal mines, steel works etc so they were never far away from a supply of coal and water, and didn't need to haul there own supply.

What interested me was the valve linkage it looked like Stevenson outside system driven off the back wheels with a rod running the full length of the loco to the slide valves on the cylinders its very unusual to me I've not seen that system before no doubt it has a name but its unknown to me.

As for the crane tank I was wondering if you could use the Tich design to base a model on, at 3 1/2" gauge Tich to my eyes is a bit on the small size but there are plenty of 5" gauge Tiches running about and that would be a better size to base it on, and you would have more room to get the crane gear in.
