I bought a little vice for my little mill, from Harrogate......

Beautiful, fully ground pieces of hardened steel. Just 1½” wide..... Dwarfed by the 100mm version which came with the machine!

During handling, the cross pin spent most of it`s time falling onto the floor. So, I turned down an 8mm caphead screw.

The “false start” under the head, is for my fingernails to grip......

This one can only exit in one direction.

Made a pair of clamp washers etc.....

Along with the 10mm chuck now installed, I`ve got some 7" tooling clearance.....  :thumbup:

Which brings me to my next project.......

Took a deep breath and thought about it, for a while.......  :scratch:

It needs the tiny drill supporting, while drilling through the centre of the broken stud......

Made a tiny bush, 3/32" diameter,

With a 1.5mm hole through.....

Clock level in vice, then clock up the bush collar......

1.5mm drill now supported down to the top of the broken stud.

Open out to 2mm dia, then run a 7BA tap down, to clean out the thread.

All done...... And, all ok! ..... Heave a big sigh of relief......  :thumbup:

Hi Dave, I received my 2" vice a few weeks ago and I LOVE it....

Ive been trawling through this for months now and had myself convinced to build the little screwless vice... until I found a 2" unit on sale for $36 aus (about 12 quid UK) so I couldnt resist and now Im almost in love.... in fact Ive now convinced myself to scale it up to 4" to go with my old 6" screw vice.

In short..THESE ARE GREAT, good score Dave!

wow great tip there  on drilling out that broken part. ive got a couple things that need drilling was waiting for the fix now i have it  YAHOOOOO :mmr:

That final wonderful moment, when you realise,  it`s all gone good!    Wish there was some way of bottling that high!  :D

There`s a lot of wonderful work there..... If I only had the time.... Oh..... Yes, and the skills too....  ::)

I`d had enough...... Me little feet were telling me it was time to go home.... I was feeling a bit miffed, cos I usually buy meself a "present".

I was standing in the doorway, having a last look, before turning my back. When I realised, I`d not spotted any of those vices...... I was right by the Chronos stall!  :)

They had just a couple of this size left, and very few 25mm ones...... I think they`ve been a popular line this year!


The vice is very sweetly ground, & accurately made.

But, when gripping the 6 x 20mm clamp packing pieces, I was surprised to find the jaw still lifts on tightening..... Necessitating tapping down with me little lead tup.  :thumbup:
