Granville Senior lathe incoming..
« on: June 14, 2013, 06:12:10 PM »
Hi all

On another forum, a member was after a woodworking lathe and was offering the Granville Senior as a swap..
I have a Record 24dml machine that I bought second hand a few years ago, it had been used once by the original owner and due to the dust it created, he decided that wood turning wasn't for him!!

I bought the machine plus a full set Marples chisels, I then acquired a chuck set for it...

I never managed to set it up either as one of my sheds collapsed through old age (went rotten!!) so the contents went in to my already full garage!!

anyhow, next weekend i'll be nipping down to Derby to do the swap, i'm going to have to clear a place in my other shed as I made a bench of 8"x2", when I screw some 1/4" steel to it, it'll do the job!

The Granville was actually being used to turn wooden spindles so will probably be full of wood dust!!

Some tooling that will come with the machine..

It looks as though it only comes with the changewheels that are fixed to the lathe but i've read that most stuff for the Myford7/Super7 will fit so there should be plenty to go at!!!

Can't wait until next week now to have a 'play' with it!!

Does anyone have experience of these machines, it's much different to my old Faircut lathe and looks like the headstock has grease nipples instead of oilers

Cheers, John

Exciting to get a new (old) lathe! And lots of projects to make for it.

One thing I would suggest you could do in advance is order one of those link type vee belts that you can make up to length. It will save having to remove the headstock spindle to change the belt, unless you were planning to remove it anyway. Depending on the lathe that can sometimes be rather tricky.

I love it when a Plan B comes together!

Hi Chip

Thanks, they looked like the flat grease nipples that we have on the cranes at work!!

On my Faircut, it had oilers thar were auto in that there was no valve of any kind, I got hold of some spring loaded oilers that had a glass reservoir and swapped one of them, I lost the original one which was better than the glass bowled one  :palm:

Is your Faircut Senior the same as my Faircut (doesn't say Senior or Junior !)...

Sorry for the poor pic, i'm rather useless with a camera  :(

Cheers, John

Hi John,
Youv'e made a good swap, the Granville is a well made Lathe, I'm sure you will enjoy cleaning and stripping the machine, it may even get new coat of paint, makes such a difference.

                                                                                          Good Luck   David
