Three Cylinder Mamod.

The other week, we held a little steam up at a local pub, for the local Children`s Hospice...... Made around £700.....  :thumbup:

Here`s a little video of an Old Bloke, with a three cylinder Mamod steam engine he made......

The engine is now on rout to a young man, (Clinton), in Australia. This was filmed by our, Sandman, as a surprise for him.





It looks/ performs so well, I am beginning to wish I`d kept it.....

Is that as Mamod made it, or your own version made from Mamod parts?

BTW, when I first started the vid. for some reason it was sound with no picture for about 5 secs.

I thought it was Fred Dibnah .....   :lol:  :lol:

Now fitted with MK11 plastic pistons Stew. The Mark1`s are packed as spares. :thumbup:

Sorry about me elbows on the table...... Very bad manners, in company!  ::)

There was an elbow engine there! Manually rotated only. It raised a lot of interest......    :D

From this angle, it looks like a hit`n miss howitzer!  :D

It`s a Huxtable hot air engine, made in Australia.

Some 17" long, with a 5.5"dia x 1" cast iron flywheel, it`s rather larger than the "toy" engines I usually come across.

At the moment, I`m sorting a burner system for it...... Getting it to run slowly, reliably.  :thumbup:



I rather like that.....

Of course it`s quiet..... This is a quiet and genteel area you know!  ::)

Needed a toolbox to store/ transport it in..... Wilco had a stack of 19" Stanley boxes, for £5 each...... So, I bought two!  :thumbup:

Went back the following day & bought two more! Yer can`t have too many toolboxes.....  :D

Finished the modular burner. Probably!  :scratch:

Got to make a windshield. Today, mebbe!

Re, drop hammer....... I might drive a forge...... Then install line shafting, for the workshop.....  :lol: :lol:

Well....... Hands up, all those who just knew it wouldn`t be long before I was fiddling with it!   ::)


Listening to my vid, you can hear it ticking.....  :scratch:

After some 4hrs+ of running, the tick had become a tap.  :bang:

Not wanting the tap to become a clonk...... I have bushed the little end bearing to "nil" clearance, rather than the manufacturer`s 1/4mm.

The offset one, on the left.....

Dave, that was the only baggy bearing in the whole engine....... I think the idea was to allow the 6" long rod to align properly with it`s big end.

The pin measured 3.47 and the hole 3.78 (near as.....). When bushed, it aligned ok for me!

Quite nice and smooth, David.  Job well done.

I have a question or two, (about the Huxtable) if you don't mind?
The hex fitting in the end of the cylinder, is that for packing?
And, it may seem obvious to someone who's seen it up close, but which is the power piston rod?  The one on the side looks
to have a smaller stroke, and the one in the center a longer one.  A guess makes me think the center rod is for the displacer,
but I'm not seeing it clearly in my head.
Are the power piston and cylinder both of brass?

Lots of questions, I know.  I've never seen on of these up close.  It's a lovely runner.

The 1940`s Cyldon steam engine was very badly designed..... The piston has to support itself, and the conrod etc.  :scratch:

It soon becomes very badly worn...... ::)

So, I`ve reamed the cylinder deeper to allow a longer, re sleeved piston......  :thumbup:

Unfortunately, the crankshaft is a pressed together, flimsy wire assembly.

Don`t like it. Don`t want it. But, Les in Bournemouth collects Cyldons....... It`s going south, soon.....  :D
