How do I remove the cross slide on a 9 x 20 (warco 918)
« on: March 03, 2015, 04:00:39 PM »
Hello again.
I am in the process of degreasing my lathe. I have removed the compound slide. Which is super stiff. The cross slide is even stiffer. I have loosened the gib screws and the locking screw. What do I need to do to actually remove the cross slide. There is a screw that holds the cross side nut to the slide but removing it does nothing. There is supposedly a grub screw that tightens up the cross slide nut but I don't even think its been fitted. Any ideas, its probably something simple but its all brand new to me.

Thanks in advance

Jon

Remove the hand wheel from the x slide leadscrew, don't lose the key!
Remove the spindle support bracket, 2 x M6 cap heads......The x slide should then slide toward you, with the cover....You could at this point unscrew the lead screw leaving the nut attached to the casting. You should the see why the nut is stuck, it is retained with a csk screw and there should be a socket head grub screw in there too....the actual nut has a shoulder on it that fits into the underside of the cross slide, there's insufficient lateral movement to remove it but you'll see how it all comes apart.......I think that's about it...

To the rescue again John. Thanks. Just out of interest, how hard should it be to turn the cross slide wheel. One hand is a bit of a struggle!

The hand wheel should turn freely, if it doesn't then you need to find out why.....it could be the end float is incorrectly adjust and the wheel is binding against the back face and the leadscrew bracket....

After loosening the gibs, a monster clean up it was still the same. Then I read your last post John. Sweet as a nut. Just an eighth of a turn on the adjustment of backlash and all is well.
Thank you
