Hello lads.
I am building a R8 collet chuck that fits onto the nose of my lathe, my question is what angle is best at the hole where the collet seats into to clamp it closed, its a straight hole but you need the lead to guide it in.

Another project you're doing, I've wanted to do myself!
Don't know if this is what you were asking:

But also thinking 5C might be a better bet for the lathe, since long stock can pass through it, which the R-8 won't allow.

Been there Done that! Here is the link to the one I made back in 2011.

Anthony the Schedule 80 pipe I used is excellent material. It machines cleanly and polishes up easily. The only problem is that it has to be bushed down at the draw bar end as it is a few thou' oversized. Let me know if you would like a piece as I have about 5 feet of it in my goodie box.
BTW, I also made a 5C closer for my 12 X 36 Asian lathe. I found a MT5 to R-8 sleeve at Grizzly but I don't know if they still carry them.

75..
I remember your thread....
your idea and build has changed my project im doing here..... i need to check out pipe sizes, once done i will post my design to see what you think.
Thank you
Anthony.

VT..
Didn't mean to be rude i omitted your responses in my last post on this....
referring to 75 Plus pipe chuck, it struck me on what you mentioned that you can make one chuck for both 5C and R8...

Hey Anthony, not rude at all! I was just thinking aloud about what I ought to do for my lathe. I hadn't though about passing stock through the collet before when I was considering R8.
I did a lookup on 5C collet chucks, and they're too expensive for me to be able to buy. $250 and without a backing plate.
I was thinking of something like Doubleboost's ER collet holder for me. Where mine fit over the spindle threads and register. It wouldn't be as neat as John's ER because it would have to be much larger to accommodate the longer collets. And if it was 5C the pass through size would be limited to my lathe's spindle bore -- which is a lot less than the 5C range. I don't know if any of this is practical -- still an unformed general wish rather than Plan A.
